Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Dorrells.
Hi Robert, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It was Christmas in Denver, 2023 the founder of Bike Shop Denver and Bicycles 4 Children Michael Dorval asked me if I would like to go caroling with him To possibly help raise money or get Bicycles donated to help get Bicycles to Children for Christmas. When he saw my enthusiasm, Michael asked if I would like to do this full-time and I said yes since then we have built an inclusive community that’s passionate about our mission. we have built relationships with non profits and bike shops and we have changed over 100 young lives with the gift of a new bicycle. We participate in community activities and races to help us spread the word of our mission. As well as participated in concerts and large giveaway events, that make each child feel special and a part of something Great.
I’ve been on a bike my entire life and I couldn’t imagine not having one which is why it’s so important for me to be able to provide that same sense of freedom and independence that I got to Children in need.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As many will know opening and running a business is never a smooth road. Running a nonprofit has no exceptions, although most of our struggles have been financial we seem to be able to pull through and get things done, with hard work and determination.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Bicycles 4 Children is a nonprofit in Denver with the mission to provide Bicycles to children for free.
We teach maintenance and safety Through nonprofits and schools.
And set up special occasion giveaway events with other nonprofits that give the children, a one of a kind experience while they receive the bicycles. We know that having a bike and riding it can lower risks of chronic diseases like obesity and diabetes.
We also know that the bicycle community can help foster in a more inclusive community and help bridge Social and economic gaps with in our community.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Which gyms closed and public transportation, suspended millions of Americans re-discovered bicycles as a Safeway of getting out of the house and getting around while exercising
We also learned that children were 30% less active during this time and that many children did not have the means to get a bike that they could ride comfortably and have fun on so a majority of children stayed inside.
Additionally, with all the new bikers on the road, we learn the importance of teaching bicycle safety and etiquette at a young age.
What we learned during Covid had a direct impact on our decision to start Bicycles For Children as a serious mission in Denver.
