Meet Ryan Lloyd of Echo Architecture + Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Lloyd.

Hi Ryan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I (Ryan the founding principal of Echo) moved to Colorado Springs in 2008 from Portland, OR. The story on how I landed in the Springs is a long and winding one (that involves me vowing to “never live in this City” just a few months before moving here, yet falling in love with it shortly after). Suffice it to say, I’m from Colorado, wanted to get back here and saw A LOT of architectural potential in the Springs.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting an architecture firm at the peak of The Great Recession is no joke. Starting a boutique design firm in a City that wasn’t seeking out design in that era made it even more of a challenge. We literally had to create a market for what we do in this City. This required a lot of hard work, a lot of donated time, and a lot of tenacity. We’re fortunate to say, the hard work has paid off — with the opportunity to provide meaningful design within our community through great projects, a lot of great clients, and wonderful personal and business relationships we have built through the years.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a small, boutique design firmed based in the historic Old Colorado City neighborhood of Colorado Springs, CO. Our firm specializes in adaptive reuse of existing buildings and infill development in the core of our City. We are known for having designed many of Colorado Springs favorite places: from restaurants, to breweries and coffee shops, to hotels, spas, salons, and wellness sanctuaries, to retail and places of work; if you’ve been there in the Springs and loved it, there’s a solid chance Echo designed it. I believe the thing that sets us apart from others is just how hard we work. We transform challenging existing buildings, with the most innovative clients, in a City that isn’t used to that. We go the extra mile to realize the best end results, our projects are our babies, and we strive to bring them into this world and watch them thrive! I can’t think of one thing we are most proud of, but I can tell you that walking in to one of our projects that began as a decrepit building in an avoided corner of town, and seeing a vibrant, thriving community hub that we get to participate in fills me with joy; every, single, time.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
For me it’s relationships. We go into our projects with a team mentality; our clients, our employees, our consultants, the builders and craftspeople that make the project a reality are all equally important. This isn’t the best “business” mentality, but we do this for the love of design and that is how we make it a reality.
