Meet Samantha Johnson of Fort Collins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Johnson

Hi Samantha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After high school I did what most kids do and started college. I went to the University of Wyoming and I had a great time while I was there making friends and enjoying the college experience, except when it came to the actual school part of it. After two and a half years there I told my mom that school just isn’t for me, so I moved back home and decided that I wanted to start a business making dog bandanas and dog treats. My own dog Bear was the main inspiration for my business which is why I decided to make him the face of the business. I was a college dropout that didn’t know anything about running a business so I just dove in head first and hoped I would figure it out on the way. My first summer in business I did one farmers market every week just to see if this could actually work as a business and to my surprise it was a hit and I haven’t stopped since. After that first summer I have learned a lot, made some mistakes, and done lots of research to continue and grow my business to where it’s at today. It’s been a hard road but being able to do something I love and put a smile on other dog lovers faces helps me push even more to continue growing my business.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting this business has definitely been a bumpy road for me. I had no experience on how to run a business I mean I had never even taken a business class before so I was totally in the dark at the start. My first year in business I was just guessing on my prices hoping they weren’t too expensive but also hoping I was making some money. After my first year I quickly realized I needed to figure out my pricing to give myself the best chance possible to make this business successful. I did lots of research on pricing products and also took what I learned from other vendors I had met to correctly price all of my products.
What foods are safe for dogs? How do you preserve natural dog treats without using actual preservatives? When it came to expanding my treat options these were the two biggest questions I had to ask myself. I had to do lots of research on different foods and baking ingredients when I first started and even then some new treats worked out and some didn’t.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I own and run Happy Pupperz and I specialize in making all things dog related from dog treats and bandanas to dog related stickers and glasses for pet parents. I would have to say since I introduced freeze dried treats to my business that has been my staple product. Most of my customers know me for my ever growing array of freeze dried treat options. I would have to say that I am most proud of my decorated dog treats. I think what sets me apart from others is that I offer freeze dried fruits and vegetables along with different meats and most other companies only offer freeze dried meats.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Anyone who would like to work or collaborate with me can always reach out to me through my website or through my social medias. I am always willing to listen to peoples ideas and thoughts.
