Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Gunning.
Sara, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started “The Tea, Please” podcast because I knew I wanted to build a platform that would help others process their struggles better. And let’s be honest to help me process my struggles a little better too. Mental health is tough, I’ve struggled with it long before I had the vocabulary to describe what I was feeling. That’s how I know how important these conversations are!
Our society has come a long way when it comes to the mental health conversation, but I don’t want to see it get stagnant. I started looking at what medium would make the most sense to get my message across and I landed on podcasting. It allows me to ask the questions I want to ask and bring on mental health experts, and it allows me to connect to my audience on a deeper level.
I love sitting down on a Sunday recording my intros or a solo episode. Almost one year into producing “The Tea, Please” and it’s brought me so much healing, connection, and growth. I can’t wait to see what’s next for our community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Ironically the biggest struggles I’ve had with producing The Tea, Please are also mental health-related. It’s challenging to participate in the online world and social media without getting sucked in and consuming too much. I’ve fallen victim to crippling comparison and anxiety when I feel I should be posting, promoting, or networking more than I feel like I have the capacity to.
Layer in imposter syndrome when I’m having my own struggles and trying to produce a show about how to have better mental health. It’s hard, and I don’t want to show up every day. I still struggle with feeling like I’m not doing enough.
But that’s also why I love producing the show. It challenges me to keep my online habits in check, it forces me to reflect on my mental health and to be better. This show makes me better.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m honest, about my own struggles and with the questions I ask each guest that comes on the show. I’m extremely curious and I use that to my advantage. I try to ask questions that you might be having yourself while listening.
As a podcast host, I’ve always been open about what I experience as a human because I’ve never understood how our society sometimes doesn’t want to talk about the real struggles that humans have. I don’t want people to feel alone in their mental health struggle, and I want people to be inspired to pick themselves back up, to keep making positive changes, to keep learning about themselves, to stay conscious.
It’s important and we need as many people as possible with this kind of mission. The world needs it.
How do you define success?
Personally, I would define my own success by being able to help and connect with as many people as possible while also being financially free. It’s a privilege to curate your days and choose your own schedule and the projects you work on.
It’s also a privilege to follow your passions and live in alignment with what you feel is your mission and purpose in life. That’s what I ultimately want, to feel complete alignment with my work and have it sustain my lifestyle.
