Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Nininger.
Hi Sarah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started Action in Africa two decades ago as a high schooler. After spending time in Uganda, I realized that the issue wasn’t a lack of talent or ambition, but a lack of access to opportunity. I was deeply inspired by the creativity, resilience, and leadership I saw in the community, particularly among young people and women.
What began as a small, grassroots effort in Nakuwadde, Uganda has grown into a community-led organization that provides holistic programming, including after-school and enrichment programs, secondary and university scholarships, women’s empowerment, adult education, and community health outreach. Throughout our growth, we’ve stayed rooted in local leadership and long-term relationships.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Like many nonprofit founders, I’ve faced funding uncertainty, burnout, and the pressure of carrying responsibility for both people and programs. Building an organization across cultures and continents has required constant learning, humility, and trust, especially when challenging traditional nonprofit power dynamics.
I’ve had to learn how to let go, to trust, and to prioritize sustainability over speed. The challenges we’ve faced shaped both me and the organization, and they pushed us to be more transparent, values-driven, and accountable to the communities we serve.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
International nonprofit
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is seeing students continuing their education, women building independence, and community members shaping the future of our programs.
On a much smaller (but still important) scale, cinnamon gummies from Trader Joe’s bring me an unreasonable amount of joy.
But honestly, I’m moved by from seeing impact that will outlive me, and knowing it’s rooted in dignity, opportunity, and local leadership.
