Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Pascoe.
Hi Shannon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I have been a physical therapist for 17 years now. I specialized in oncology, and while specializing in this area of physical therapy I found a need for a pathway to appropriate return to exercise, health, and wellness following surgery, chemotherapy, radiation treatment, and hormone-blocking medications following cause additional side effects.
I then certified in Pilates and later Lagree Fitness. I have been able to provide an all-encompassing treatment plan for people of all ages. I utilized exercise for strength, stability, flexibility, functional capacity, promotion of athletic/sports goals, and independence. It is something I am extremely passionate about and I eventually decided that I needed to reach more people with it. I started my own business in which I can provide physical therapy, personal training, Pilates, and Lagree Fitness.
I incorporate manual therapy a hands-on approach with therapeutic exercise for optimal results. I work with all people whether oncology, orthopedics, pre and post-natal, young or older. I am thankful for the amazing support system that has helped me to network, put on open houses, attend fundraising events, form relationships with doctors, and allow word of mouth to help me grow.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is nerve-racking to leave a job with a steady consistent paycheck of course. It is also a learning curve to take on the business aspect. I am a trained healthcare professional, but I do not have a business degree. That was all new to me. I have had to become more savvy with technology, marketing, and making sure I am staying on top of running the business in conjunction with patient care. I am always wondering when and where my next client will come from.
But, overall I have loved the decision to become an entrepreneur. I love the autonomy I have. It is challenging me to step into new skills. I also have realized the networking system I have in Denver especially. I have so many amazing people in my life who allow me to be better for the next person walking in my door.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in oncology, women’s health, and athletic survivorship. I am known for my work with clients going through breast cancer, I work a lot with younger women diagnosed with breast cancer to return them to their sport and athletic activities of choice. I am able to take a client through the whole journey including surgery/reconstructive surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and hormone medication (this may throw them into early onset menopause creating a whole other world of side effects).
I am known for my specialty in Pilates and Lagree Fitness for rehab and general exercise. I am most proud of my client’s success. Each time I have a client tell me they feel stronger, they ran a marathon after months of chemotherapy, they went back to golf following a reconstructive surgery, or even that they can pick up their child these are moments I am proud of. I strive to have positive relationships with these clients.
I check in on them, I make sure they have access to me, and I am available to them, more than just the 30-minute PT appointment. I care about them. I have a community class I started a few years ago and this I am proud of. I am a bridge for these clients between the fragile sensitive stage of starting to return to “normal” life, exercise, and work and the transition to ongoing survivorship.
This is an opportunity for women to get to know each other who have been through a similar journey. A chance to talk, have friendships and know they are not alone. They gain independence, they feel empowered, strong, and community, and support all things allowing for someone to thrive! I can’t tell them I understand, but I have empathy and I can introduce them to someone who does understand.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
1) I love how active and health-conscious it is, the beautiful outdoors and all it has to offer. 2) How busy and crowded it has become.
