Today we’d like to introduce you to Shenelle Roebuck.
Shenelle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Kuumba Therapy, LLC began from a deep passion for healing, empowerment, and creating spaces where people, especially those from historically underserved communities, could feel seen, supported, and valued. Founded by Shenelle Roebuck, LCSW, Kuumba Therapy was built on the belief that mental health is not just about managing challenges; it is about helping people rediscover their power, rewrite their stories, and create lives aligned with their purpose.
With over a decade of experience as a trauma-informed therapist, Shenelle recognized a common thread among many of the individuals she served: talented, ambitious people were often carrying invisible barriers such as generational trauma, perfectionism, imposter syndrome, fear of failure, burnout, and limiting beliefs that prevented them from reaching their full potential. This realization inspired the expansion of Kuumba Therapy beyond traditional therapy into a holistic wellness and empowerment brand.
Over the years, Kuumba Therapy evolved into a space that bridges mental health, personal development, and entrepreneurship. The practice began supporting not only individuals seeking healing but also entrepreneurs who needed support with the mindset and emotional wellness required to build successful businesses and meaningful lives.
Today, Kuumba Therapy offers therapy services, entrepreneur wellness coaching, motivational speaking, workshops, and transformational programs designed to help people heal and grow. Signature programs such as Mind My Business Coaching and I Luv Me Some Me, and were created to address the connection between mindset, wellness, and success. Through these programs, Kuumba Therapy helps clients address the internal barriers that impact personal and professional growth, including scarcity mindset, perfectionism, imposter syndrome, self-worth challenges, and entrepreneurial burnout. The brand has also expanded into creating mindset journals that allow individuals to continue their growth journey beyond coaching and workshops.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey of building Kuumba Therapy, LLC has not always been a smooth road, but every challenge has created an opportunity for growth, refinement, and expansion. I believe that entrepreneurship requires us to embrace the spaces where we are stretched because those moments often reveal where we have the greatest opportunities to evolve.
When I first opened my private practice, I had a checklist of the things I needed to establish a business entity, forming the LLC, creating the structure, and providing quality mental health services. However, that checklist did not teach me how to run a scalable business. For several years, I was operating my practice, but I was not fully equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to grow it strategically. I had to learn the difference between being a great clinician and being a successful business owner. I did not fully understand the importance of operations, systems, financial strategy, marketing, scaling, and building a sustainable business model. I was passionate about the work, but I did not yet have the entrepreneurial framework to maximize the opportunities available to me as a Black mental health provider.
The most challenging part was realizing that I did not know what I did not know. Because of those knowledge gaps, there were years when I was leaving revenue, clients, partnerships, and growth opportunities on the table; not because of a lack of passion or ability, but because I needed access to the right information, mentorship, and resources.
Over the past several years, I have intentionally invested in business trainings, coaching, and professional development to strengthen the areas where I needed growth. I have learned how to build stronger systems, think strategically, develop additional revenue streams, and position Kuumba Therapy as more than a private practice. It has become a brand focused on mental wellness, entrepreneurship, empowerment, and transformational growth.
One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that successful entrepreneurship requires humility, curiosity, and a willingness to continuously learn. Growth does not happen by avoiding challenges, it happens by seeking support, investing in yourself, and surrounding yourself with a community of entrepreneurs who can help you navigate the journey.
My advice to other business owners is to build your entrepreneur circle, seek mentorship, and never be afraid to acknowledge the areas where you need support. Adversity is not a sign that you are failing; it is often the invitation to grow into the next level of leadership. Every challenge I have faced has helped me become a better business owner, a stronger leader, and a more impactful advocate for the communities I serve.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Kuumba Therapy, LLC ?

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories was returning to the U.S. Virgin Islands, the place I call home, when I was 17 years old. This experience was much more than a trip, it was a reconnection to my roots, my culture, and a deeper understanding of who I was and the communities I wanted to serve.
It had been 13 years since my last visit, and returning to the islands allowed me to reacquaint myself with the beauty, history, and traditions of my homeland. I spent time exploring the island, learning about its rich cultural history, enjoying the beaches, reconnecting with family, and beginning to imagine my future as I explored college opportunities.
That experience opened my eyes to a cultural depth and richness that was very different from what I had experienced growing up in the continental United States. Being immersed in the community challenged me to move beyond learning about people through books, stereotypes, or assumptions and instead understand people through connection, relationships, and shared experiences.
My time in the Virgin Islands shaped the way I see the world and influenced the work I do today. It strengthened my commitment to serving diverse communities and creating spaces where people feel seen, valued, and supported. It also helped me recognize the importance of understanding people’s stories, cultural backgrounds, and lived experiences when providing support and care. That experience became part of the foundation for Kuumba Therapy, LLC. The mission of Kuumba Therapy is rooted in helping individuals from diverse backgrounds access healing, growth, and empowerment, especially those who have been impacted by generational patterns, trauma, and experiences that have made seeking support feel out of reach.
Looking back, that journey at 17 years old was a defining moment. It connected me to my heritage, expanded my worldview, and planted the seeds for the work I continue to do today: helping people heal, embrace their identity, and create meaningful change for themselves and future generations.
