Meet Sofia Young of Capital Hill, Denver, Colorado

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofia Young

Hi Sofia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my journey as a vocalist and songwriter at the age of 12 years old. I began singing at the young age of four but began taking it seriously in seventh grade. I began vocal lessons and writing songs about my emotions and tough situations within my family and friendships. I didn’t release my first song until I was 18, even though I had started dabbling with producing at the beginning of high school. I have always wanted to be a messenger for change through my music as well, and I’ve had an affinity for politics, social issues, and humanitarianism. The reason I released my first song was because I was modeling for a friend’s makeup campaign back in my home state, Georgia, for vegan red lipsticks she had created. I was sitting in her chair and we got onto the topic that I was a musician. and she had asked if I had any songs released and I didn’t at the time, I always second-guessed my capabilities and never completed an instrumental for a song to release it. We made an agreement that I would write and release a song about her red lipstick campaign. This caused me to go on a research mission, trying to find the historical origins of red lipstick and feminism and that is how my song In Red, a female empowerment anthem, was born. I took some time after that to try and release more music but nothing was sticking for me. I then came out to Denver and I got immersed into the music scene and music organizations here, I am forever grateful for the opportunities I have received out here because I continue to grow as an artist and community member. I hope I continue to spread messages of empowerment through my work that supersedes In Red and my latest single, Friends Don’t Come Easily.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was not a smooth road getting to this point. My mental health and certain habits I had pertaining to relationships were holding me back. I was always seeking others’ approval, and that was extremely unhealthy. I wasn’t getting the encouragement I needed so desperately, and that made me procrastinate working on my artistry and had me second-guessing my capabilities. I wasn’t putting myself out there, in fear of disapproval, embarrassment, and rejection. I was putting other’s needs before myself as well. I finally broke out of those cycles and applied myself to things just for the hell of it and realized I was capable, I was worthy, and I could do anything I put my mind to. I found organizations and people who would lift me up and put in the personal work to reach goals, build my confidence in myself, and break the cycles in myself that were inhibiting my growth.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a vocalist, songwriter, voice, and piano teacher. I specialize in voice for sure. I have been studying vocal technique for nine years and teaching it for two years. I would say I am most known for being a musician and performing around the city. I have performed at places like Civic Center Park, Two Moons Music Hall, and The Roxy on Broadway. I am most proud of my music video, which came out in August 2024. I spent time filming it with a friend back home in Atlanta and it turned out amazing. What sets me apart from others is my attention to detail and nuance. I love telling a story with my lyrics, with the colors associated with the cover art, and with certain motifs in my photos and promotions like flowers. I pay attention to symbolism and what subliminal messages I can send beyond the main messages.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like most about Denver is how tight-knit the communities are within it, which is also what I like least about it! The city seems so small sometimes, which is a good and bad thing to me.
