Meet Stephan Ross of Sanctuary Floral

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephan Ross.

Hi Stephan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
For years, I devoted my life to teaching. I believed deeply in the power of connection, creativity, and giving children a safe space to grow. As a special education teacher in both elementary and middle school, I dedicated myself to supporting students who needed patience, compassion, and understanding.

But over time, the weight of the job — the constant stress, the emotional toll, and the lack of support — began to erode something inside me. I witnessed unethical practices within the public education system, moments where the humanity of students and teachers alike was lost to bureaucracy and indifference.

I faced verbal and physical abuse from students, and instead of receiving understanding, I was often met with silence or blame from administration. I kept showing up anyway — smiling through anxiety, pushing through sickness, telling myself it was just part of being strong.
But strength has limits.

One day, in the middle of the school hallway, my body gave out. I collapsed — the world spinning, my heart pounding in panic and pain. Later, doctors told me I had suffered a small myocardial infarction, a mild heart attack.

It was terrifying. But it was also the moment that forced me to stop and ask: What if survival isn’t the same as living?

That question became the seed of something new — Sanctuary Floral.
What started as a coping mechanism, a way to breathe again, turned into a purpose. In flowers, I found healing. I found softness after years of hardness. I found beauty where my body and heart had once only known burnout.

“I’m a healer, and I want to heal people in pretty ways. I’m tired of ugly.”
Those words became the heartbeat of my work — a vow to bring gentleness and grace into spaces that have known pain.

I earned my Master’s Degree in Education, but it was through flowers that I rediscovered my true calling — to heal, to create, and to nurture growth in new ways.

I can create beautiful, meaningful arrangements for my clients no matter what their budget is. Each design is deeply personal — I pour my soul into my work, and people often tell me they can feel that loving, positive energy through every petal. Some have even been moved to happy tears, describing it as something sacred — mysterium tremendum, the awe of encountering beauty that feels divine.

Today, Sanctuary Floral has grown into something even more meaningful — Sanctuary in Bloom, a developing 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to creating floral arrangements for the forgotten deceased and low-income families. Through this work, I also create floral pieces for local shelters and survivors of violence — offering dignity, beauty, and love during unimaginably painful times.

I often bring extra cuttings and host “flower baths” at shelters, inviting people to use blooms as tools for healing — to touch, to smell, to create, to remember that even after trauma, something soft and beautiful can grow again.

Starting this journey hasn’t been easy. Anxiety still walks beside me every day. There are moments of doubt, fear, and loneliness. But there is also gratitude — because every bouquet I create is a quiet act of reclaiming my life and sharing light with others.

To anyone out there who has been broken by a system that didn’t see your humanity, please hear me:
You are allowed to begin again. You are allowed to trade chaos for creativity, exhaustion for peace. You are allowed to make something beautiful out of what nearly destroyed you.

Sanctuary Floral is more than a business.
It’s a love letter to resilience.
It’s proof that even through pain, something beautiful can still bloom.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Breaking into the floral industry has been one of the hardest journeys I’ve ever taken. Many established florists are extremely protective of their trade secrets, and the industry can be very competitive — especially for someone trying to build a business based on heart, art, and human connection rather than volume or trend.

When doors kept closing, I took a minimum-wage delivery job just to stay close to flowers and learn whatever I could. I drove from shop to shop, often treated like “the help” while delivering other florists’ arrangements. It was discouraging at times, but it also strengthened my resolve to create something different — a space grounded in kindness and inclusivity.

For a long time, I worked out of my home, building Sanctuary Floral from scratch with whatever materials I could afford. Then, a close friend saw my passion and offered to share his salon space with me. That small act of faith changed everything. It gave me the chance to showcase my work publicly and begin transforming my dream into a tangible reality.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sanctuary Floral?
Sanctuary Floral is more than just a flower shop — it’s a storytelling studio where every arrangement is crafted to evoke emotion, memory, and connection. I specialize in luxury, custom-designed florals for weddings, sympathy tributes, and special events, as well as bespoke everyday arrangements that feel deeply personal. Every design tells a story — whether it’s celebrating a milestone, honoring a loved one, or simply bringing beauty into a space that needs warmth.

What sets Sanctuary apart is the heart behind the work. I don’t see flowers as a product; I see them as a form of communication and healing. Each arrangement is thoughtfully composed with layers of texture, color, and symbolism. My clients often tell me they can “feel” the intention in every piece, and that’s the greatest compliment I could ever receive.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the authenticity that Sanctuary represents. There’s no pretense or pressure — just genuine artistry rooted in kindness, inclusivity, and connection. My goal is to remind people that beauty can be found in the smallest of details, and that flowers — like people — have stories worth telling. Sanctuary Floral is, at its core, where every petal tells a story.. I can create any arrangement and happily meet my clients budget

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about Denver is its creative spirit and sense of community. There’s an energy here that celebrates individuality — from the artists and small business owners to the everyday dreamers who support local talent. Denver feels like a city that embraces reinvention, where people aren’t afraid to carve out their own paths and make something beautiful from the ground up. The mountains just beyond the skyline serve as a constant reminder to stay grounded yet keep reaching higher.

What I like least is how difficult it can be for small, heart-driven businesses to break through. Rising costs and competition can make it hard for creative entrepreneurs to find their footing, especially those who lead with passion rather than profit. Still, that challenge fuels my determination. I believe Denver thrives because of its dreamers — and I’m proud to be one of them, adding my own petals to the city’s story
