Meet Sylvia Lambe of Lambe PR

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylvia Lambe.

Hi Sylvia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Destination Denver!! When my American husband suddenly died in London of a heart attack in 2016, the decision to move with our eight-year-old to his home state of Colorado seemed obvious.

I couldn’t give my son his father, but I could give him a feeling of his US identity.

In reflection, I realized my international heritage influenced my seemingly straightforward approach toward a life-changing transatlantic relocation.

I was born and brought up in England, but my parents had been immigrants from the former British Empire; my mother came from Barbados, and my father from Ghana. So as a descendant from the royal Ashanti tribe, my cultural soul was always nurtured, creating a positive sense of self – I wanted that for my boy.

And from a more self-centered viewpoint, the relocation to Denver was a chance to redefine my life and career in “the land of opportunity,” – so the plan ‘Destination Denver’ was devised.

So while meeting and greeting guests at the front desk, I identified opportunities to increase the awareness of the African American historical site. I developed promotional strategies that shone the media light on many unique and often untold stories. This resulted in building effective relationships with reporters and producers across a wide range of news outlets.

Since creating Lambe PR, I have magnified missions and messages for many projects; collaborating with the press team at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African History and Culture, producing TV broadcasts for social justice initiatives, and working with Black Pride, Colorado amongst many others.

In my fifth year, I no longer feel like a newbie in my adopted home and can advise a newcomer to the city.

Track down your tribe!

The internet is your gateway to discover meetup and networking groups and sign up for public community video meetings; lots have sprung up since the in-person restrictions of the pandemic. The monthly ‘Five Points Business Improvement District’ meeting is an excellent opportunity to get involved in local projects.

Colorado is known for its outdoor activities, but the Centennial state is not a one-size-fits-all. So if like me, hiking and biking aren’t your main groove, you can choose from a wide array of cocktail bars and live music venues and mark your calendars for the annual Juneteenth celebrations and film festivals – just a few suggestions.

Businesswise, one of the most beneficial online hubs for local African American-owned companies was the Denver Black Pages website. So, once I set up on my own, they were an advertising tool to promote my PR and video production services. My clients now include long-established organizations such as Rocky Mountain Public Media (RMPM) and other smaller businesses that are often priced out of the market.

In London, the equity and diversity agenda always underpinned my media communications career. So, fortunately, as a ‘transplant,’ Denver has not only turned out as the perfect place for my personal healing and growth but has also allowed me to strategize my professional creativity to amplify social justice-led projects this side of the Atlantic.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Arriving in 2017, an initial task was to spin my London public relations and BBC award-winning journalistic and production skills in a new market with a US flavor. In communications, you live or die by your connections so, being completely green, and making media contacts became my biggest challenge in creating a business profile. Therefore from experience, I understood that a volunteering position with a non-profit was my first step—this formed part of my attraction to working for free at the Black American West Museum.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
