Meet TeaYaMay

Today we’d like to introduce you to TeaYaMay.

Hi TeaYaMay, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got into music through poetry. I always loved to be creative by any means necessary. I didn’t have many friends growing up but poetry and music were a way to vent while exploring my creativity. I use to record on voice recorders or my answering machines, I know it’s corny but as I said I was crafty.

In 2012 I hit a point in my life of reinvention and wanted to record professionally. I met a very influential person who at the time was named Young Fait. We began working together and he helped mold me into the artist I am today. Now we have an entire team of talented artists. We are New West Management.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. Music has been the most stressfully rewarding journey of my life. Some of the struggles have been a lack of support from my city. The cliques and music politics, unprofessional shows, and unprofessional people.

Being a woman in this industry has a bad reputation for what’s expected to get on and the quality of music. I’m lyrically conscious and put effort into what I write yet I’m in an industry where women are idolized for their looks and rapping about their genitalia so that is a struggle within itself.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in lyricism, creative writing, some video editing, promotional material, and cover art design I’m known for making creative music and showing things from a different perspective. I’m most proud of winning a “Colorado’s Favorite Musician” award it was voter generated via pick cool. And the fact that I don’t care about what people think about me is what sets me apart from others.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes, masks and booster shots didn’t prevent much lol.
