Today we’d like to introduce you to Tolya Rubtsov.
Hi Tolya, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a suburb of Moscow, Russia, where I spent my entire childhood and youth playing competitive soccer. In 2001, I moved to the United States as a scientist and completed a PhD in Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. After earning my doctorate, I worked as a researcher in the Department of Immunology at National Jewish Health Hospital in Denver.
My journey into coaching began in 2007 when I started working with my son’s team. By 2011, I had fully transitioned into soccer coaching. To deepen my knowledge, I traveled to Barcelona, Spain, where I spent significant time learning the art of possession-based soccer from top-level coaches.
In 2014, I founded Soccer IQ Academy, with a mission to help players become more efficient and intelligent on the field through a deeper understanding of the game. In 2020, coaches Azary and Yury joined as co-owners, and together, we took SIQ to the next level.
Today, SIQ has grown into a thriving program that serves over 1,000 players each year. We now offer not only soccer camps, but also futsal training, individual and small group sessions, high school team training, and more. Our focus remains the same: to develop smart, skillful, and confident players who love the game.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges SIQ faced was when I (Tolya) moved from Colorado to San Diego to pursue a professional coaching career. It was a difficult transition, but during that time, coaches Azary and Yury stepped up in an incredible way. Their leadership, dedication, and vision not only kept SIQ moving forward—they elevated it to a whole new level.
SIQ would not be where it is today without these two outstanding coaches, leaders, and friends. I’m proud to say that the three of us, as co-owners, share not only a deep passion for the game but also a strong friendship and a unique ability to complement each other’s strengths. That connection is a big part of what makes SIQ so special.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Soccer IQ Academy is built on the foundation of the Spanish style of possession-based soccer. Our curriculum emphasizes quick decision-making and staying one step ahead of the opponent, helping players develop a high-level understanding of the game.
As a result, SIQ players make significant strides in both technical and tactical areas, becoming more efficient, confident, and impactful on the field.
We offer training programs for players of all skill levels:
• For beginners and young children, our focus is on building strong fundamentals—mastering basic soccer skills, improving agility, and developing a solid understanding of the game.
• For more advanced players, we emphasize high-level ball control, faster speed of play, spatial awareness, tactical IQ, and overall performance optimization.
Our coaching staff consists of seasoned professionals with years of experience as both players and coaches. They bring deep expertise, passion, and a genuine commitment to developing young talent while instilling a lifelong love for the game.
Success Stories:
Hudson Davis — In 2024, Hudson signed a professional contract with Girona FC in Spain after spending 6 years with Soccer IQ Academy. His journey is a testament to SIQ’s player development model.
Adrian Gill — In 2021, Adrian was signed by the legendary FC Barcelona Academy (La Masia). During his time in Colorado, he played exclusively on teams coached by SIQ founder Tolya, and was a key member of Soccer IQ Academy.
These success stories highlight what’s possible when talent, hard work, and the right development environment come together.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
At SIQ, we are always seeking new ways to provide our players with the best opportunities to reach their full potential. Embracing innovation requires a willingness to take risks, and over the past five years, we have launched several new programs—some more successful than others. However, the impact of our most successful initiatives has been undeniable.
For example, our SIQ Futsal program has grown into one of the most popular and successful in Colorado, with multiple teams winning National Championships in recent years.
If there’s one lesson we’ve learned, it’s that calculated risks, paired with a well-thought-out plan and full commitment, lead to success.
