Meet Wayne Bodmer of Rio Rancho

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wayne Bodmer

Hi wayne, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
“I got started with a genuine desire to create. It all began on a bit of a whim, when I decided to buy a display model welder from Harbor Freight. At first, my work was far from perfect – in fact, it was pretty rough and makes me cringe when I think about it now! But that’s the reality of any creative journey: you have to start somewhere. Over time, through trial and error, I honed my skills and developed my own style. This humble beginning sparked my passion for the craft, and it’s been an exciting journey of growth ever since.”

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
“The road has definitely not been smooth. In fact, it’s been more of a winding path with plenty of bumps along the way, and I’ve come to embrace that. I’ve faced challenges like equipment malfunctions, poor purchasing decisions, and even design mistakes that didn’t turn out as planned. But each obstacle taught me something valuable. Along the way, I’ve also taken detours that led me to explore other areas that complement my work in metal art, helping me grow as a creator. While the journey hasn’t been without its struggles, every setback has been an opportunity to learn and improve.”

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
“I specialize in creating sculptures primarily using metal, but my work is far from limited to just that medium. I’ve successfully integrated a wide range of materials and techniques, including 3D art, leather, electronics, and textiles, to push the boundaries of my sculptures. I focus on creating outdoor pieces that span a variety of styles—from organic forms inspired by nature to more whimsical, cartoonish, and folk-inspired designs.

What sets me apart is my versatility and willingness to experiment. I’m not confined to a single style or medium; I embrace new ideas and challenges in every project. While many artists tend to stick with what they’re comfortable with, I constantly explore new directions, which allows me to create work that is fresh, dynamic, and varied. I take great pride in this adaptability—being able to create across different genres and mediums is something I’m truly passionate about. I believe it gives my work a unique edge and keeps it exciting both for me and for those who experience it.”

What do you like and dislike about the city?
“What I like most about your city is the vibrant sense of curiosity and openness that people here have. There’s a real enthusiasm for exploring new ideas, experiences, and places, and that energy is contagious. I appreciate how the city encourages both residents and visitors to step outside their comfort zones and discover something new. Whether it’s the local culture, the food scene, or outdoor activities, there’s always something exciting to explore.

As for what I like least, honestly, there’s not much that comes to mind. I feel like the city does a great job balancing development and preserving its unique character. If anything, I’d say sometimes the pace of change can be overwhelming, but that’s part of the dynamic energy that makes the city so appealing.”
