Meet Yazyth Norelius of One of a kind interior design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yazyth Norelius.

Hi Yazyth, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Originally from Colombia, I grew up between Panama and Miami, surrounded by vibrant Art Deco and folkloric art. I actually started out studying sports medicine at the University of Florida, but a side hustle decorating dorms and apartments led me to discover my true passion—interior design. Inspired by the school’s historic architecture and the beauty of blending old with new, I made the switch and never looked back.

My formal design training came from the Miami International School of Art & Design (MISAD), where I was encouraged to push creative boundaries. Art Basel, avant-garde installations, and hands-on experiences shaped my fearless approach to design, which I bring to every project today.

Working with both residential and commercial design firms gave me exposure to a wide range of projects, but two of my most memorable experiences were assisting in the full marble restoration of Denver’s Union Station and helping a client rediscover peace in her home after a life-changing loss. No matter the project, my passion lies in creating spaces that reflect your unique story and personality—giving you the confidence to embrace your own design style rather than chase fleeting trends. I can’t wait to see your reaction when I reveal the exciting possibilities for your space!

When I’m not designing, you can find me dancing and belting out karaoke with my amazing husband, two creative kids, and our two hyperactive dogs. We love crafting in our backyard and exploring all the beauty that Colorful Colorado has to offer!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
lol definitely NOT a smooth road!! I started wanting to provide design for everyone including those who can not afford these luxury services. But unfortunately I also have bills to pay and i was not being profitable catering to DIYers and low budget clients. This also made it difficult to execute really cool out of the box ideas with low budgets. So I had to pivot and ask myself how can reach more creative clients with realistic budgets. That’s when I realized my ideal client was Missy Elliot (or here in Denver, professional athletes like Aron Gordon) These are not my ideal clients because of their fame but more because of their out of the box thinking, their innovative mentality, and yearning to not be trend followers but trend setters. I had to revamp my services but I still wanted to help those who can’t afford these services because I truly believe EVERYONE deserves to love their home not just the wealthy. So I created the “Designer Bestie on Call” & ” Design Consultation” service for those low budget clients. By doing this I was able to reach higher budget clients but now I am struggling to figure out how to get in front of the professional athlete/creative demographic.
Other obstacles have been that I am not on the high income bracket when I first started my business. I had no funding and so I have not spent any money on marketing because I could not afford it. I feel that i have gone through the word of mouth and now need to start investing in marketing. I know have enough work that i do need t get some sort of assistance whether it be a Virtual assistant of some sort. I have done all this on my own as a one woman show. I am the sales person, designer, drafter, HR, purchasing, delivery truck, etc. Add on top of that raising 2 kids (ages 5 & 10) trying to be present in their lives and volunteer at their school, have 2 dogs Swarley and Ruby Doo (senior dog with her own struggles) and also trying to stay afloat with life it’s been a struggle balancing life, motherhood, and entrepreneurship. but I find comfort and strength in connecting with other mom entrepreneurs who understand the struggle.

We’ve been impressed with One of a kind interior design, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
at One of a Kind Interior Design (OKID) we create bold, unique, and out of the box designs. We like to get to know our clients so that we can design for their unique personalities. We like our clients, their friends, and family to go into their space and say “YES this is SO YOU!!!!” We don’t follow trends we take our clients from cookie cutter to like no other.

What sets us apart from other designers are 3 things;
1. We don’t push our style on our clients. Instead we get to know our clients and design for their unique personality while pumping them up boosting their confidence to make the bold choices they were scared to do on their own.

2.- We are not just Interior Designers we also do Design/Construction Administration. Meaning that we can manage the job from concept to completion. We create construction documentation ready to submit to the city for permitting, and partner with different trades to execute the vision the client and us created and then work side by side with the contractors to execute that design. We do quality control to assure the space final look is to the level of finish and attention to detail we would want in our won home. We have mutual respect with our trade partners and therefore the trade partners will treat your home as if it were their own. Essentially we are the liaison between the client and the contractors, this helps lift stress off the clients shoulder. They don’t need to be on the phone or texting multiple trades coming in and out of their home, they don’t need to be home to let anyone in, they don’t need to be checking every corner and getting stressed when problems arise. They can trust that One of a Kind has it under control and will assure everything works out so that the client can enjoy the things they love (family time, enjoying friends, focus on their job) instead of stressing bout their project. Our commercial construction background helps us to be an asset to the client for their remodel.

3.- We are solution oriented out of the box thinking firm. That means when there is an obstacle we need to overcome on a design solution, we are going to think outside the box to make sure we get it right but also be unique. For example, our client was told they could not conceal their top loader washer; we came up with solution that has a swinging top door and a sliding bottom door so that both the washer and dryer can now be concealed and mimic a speak easy bar. Client was over the moon.
If there is an obstacle with a trade for example finding a pipe right where we wanted the shower niche, then we work collaborative with the plumber and tile steer to make sure the solution works for them but also looks aesthetically pleasing. Just because our drawings say one thing we , as construction professionals, understand that problems will arise and some tings will have to get tweaked. As long as we are thinking of the end result and making sure our client will be happy with it that is the solution we move forward with. Our trades thank us for being flexible and not expecting then to move the world for us this allows for a smooth contractor designer client relationship. At the end of the day you want your “A-Team” to consist of an interior designer, GC, and architect/engineer. If you have these 3 people for a new build that can collaborate together you will have an amazing outcome.

What I am most proud of brand wise is that we not only help our clients find their individuality, but we also help our landfills. There have been so many different clients we have worked with that had boxes of travel/sports mementos they had no clue what to do with or furniture that had a special connection to a family member that passed but did not go with anything in their home. They were thinking of throwing away. Insert OKID we find a solution to revamp these items and showcase them in a way that fits the design to bring new life to these precious meaningful items. I love to see my clients faces when they see the items in the space and 9 out of 10 times they start crying (happy tears of course)

Another thing we are proud of our brand is that we give back to the community. We are part of the board at Savvy Giving by design Denver. This organization raises money and redesigns a child’s room who is in medical crisis to help with their quality of life at home. This not only helps the child be more comfortable but also helps the parents and caregivers as well. We absolutely love giving back to these families and bringing positivity to their lives. We have also helped a non profit organizations that do amazing work in the latino and migrant communities. We helped bring their offices, lobby, and learning spaces to a ore vibrant, happy, and inviting space. Before it looked like a white hospital but after we were able to raise funds and gave wonderful partners donate furnishings and labor we were able to bring happiness and life to this cold space. Being a Latina immigrant myself (American citizen now), this one really touched my heart. It felt great to give back to my community.

So many things we are proud of lol but this one is also a big one close to our heart is that we try our best to collaborate woman owned businesses as our trades. Our plumber, electrician, furniture rep and painter are all woman owned and led businesses. If we can’t find a woman owned business then we look for minority owned businesses. Our goal is to work with small businesses who are growing and not the big box stores. We like to bring people up with us help one another grow!

My logo is representing my Panamanian culture. The fabric along the outer ring is a fabric given to me by Guna (Panamanian native woman). As you can see it has bright colors and geometric shapes. My love for color, textures, and art stems from my Colombian & Panamanian heritage.

I have 3 main services:
1- Full Service design – Expert execution of every detail from design, construction, to BIG reveal! Yes we like to have a BIG reveal party where you invite your friends and family to show off your new leveled up space. This service is perfect for a busy person who wants to enjoy a tress-free process.

2- The Design Playbook (Design Only) – Custom design plan based on your individual style, needs, and budget. We design it and you execute it. Perfect for someone who needs help organizing documentation and designing it but wants to project manage the trades to save money

3- Designer Bestie on Call – Real time feedback helping you make confident decisions on the go. “Do I get this or that tile? Who do you recommend as a plumber? Can you draw me an elevation for the carpenter?” You have a vision – we help it pop! This is perfect for the DIYers and lower budget clients that still want a beautiful home but can’t afford the luxury service. I belive everyone deserves to love their home.

All of my services start with a paid 90 minute consultation. For the DIYers sometimes this is enough to help kickstart their project and run on their own for the full service client, I typically know the design plan after this meeting and can start working on the design ASAP. its a kickstart to the project.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I used to be a professional dancer in Miami. I was i music videos, I performed as a back up dancer on the field for Ciara in the Orange Bowl, and even was a contortionist!! Now looking back on it I’m sure the creative costumes and theatrical makeup has also influenced my bold designs!
My original major at the University of Florida was Sports Medicine. I have always wanted to be in the sports world helping athletes be at their best but I realized interior design was calling me and creativity was something that is very important to me. Ironically now I am trying to get back into the music and sports world but through design. My ideal client is Missy Elliott! Her creativity, boldness, and unique style has always amazed me she is one of my idols! Back in the day i reamed of being a back up dancer for her and now my goal is to be her interior designer. I believe professional athletes like Aron Gordon of the Denver Nuggets are similar to Missy Elliott. AG has a half size basketball court in his living room!!! How unique and out of the box is that?!?!?! The reason these 2 are my ideal clients isn’t because they are famous, it’s because of their way of thinking. They don’t follow the crown they lead the crowd or better yet go against the grain creating their own way. Those are the types of people i want to work with. People who want to think outside the box create their own individual style.
