Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Buller.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have been a creative person my whole life. Since I was a teenager, I had one specific interest and passion, which was photography. I was always drawn to the visuals in the fashion industry and knew very early on that that is what I wanted to pursue. The lighting, fashion, creative hair, and makeup – every aspect inspired me to create. My only problem was that I had no one to teach me as a teenager. So, in my free time, I did research on shooting techniques, saved money to buy photography gear and lighting equipment, and practiced as much as possible to teach myself. By the time I entered college for commercial art, I was pretty confident in my skills and was excited and eager to learn even more. While in college, I also worked as an assistant for local photographers in my area which helped me gain professional experience in the industry that I was lucky enough to be able to take with me when I started and co-owned my own business in my home state of Louisiana in 2016.
Since then, I have worked as a photographer shooting studio portraits, weddings, fashion shows, and more. I’ve also taught photography to high school summer campers and hosted my own studio lighting workshop to teach other amazing photographers how I work in the studio.
In the past few years, I have moved around a lot, but now have finally set some roots here in Colorado where I’ve been pursuing photography as a hobby when I’m not at my job as a floral design assistant!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wish I could say it was a smooth road, but life as a creative is never as easy as we’d like it to be! The main struggle in my career has been moving to different cities and states for my partners’ jobs. As a business owner, it’s hard to build a client base when you can’t stay put in one place for more than a year. But during those times where I wasn’t working as often as I’d like to was when I was able to teach, which was something that I realized I really loved and was excited to explore.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am mainly a studio photographer specializing in fashion photography and studio portraits. My heart is in the studio and that’s where I am most creative and find the most joy! In my career in the past, I have felt the proudest when I was teaching photography and studio lighting to other photographers. I realized I felt the most successful when others appreciated my work enough to want to know how I achieved it.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
To those just starting out, I say practice, practice, practice. Figure out what you like, what your style is, and stick with it. Your personal style is what sets you apart from other creatives, so you should spend the extra time getting to learn who you are through your creative medium.
