Rising Stars: Meet Boonie Mayfield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Boonie Mayfield.

Boonie Mayfield

Hi Boonie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Thanks for having me! My journey into the world of music and production started from a place of pure passion and curiosity. Hip-hop was like my first love, but I was always drawn to the sounds of different genres growing up, which eventually molded my eclectic musical style.

I started as dancer in my teens — popping and breaking — and then I began experimenting with music, initially just writing raps and recording over beats in my grandparents’ basement. What started as a hobby quickly turned into a more serious pursuit after I graduated high school. I saved up money to book studio time and recorded my first album when I was 18.

Then I joined a rap duo for four years. While releasing our mixtapes locally and doing live performances, we learned how to produce our own beats. Once we began posting our beats online for sale, to our surprise, we started gaining a large following. This was a huge motivation and affirmed my decision to dive deeper into music production after the duo disbanded.

To my surprise again, after posting a few videos online, I went viral on YouTube in 2007 and became one of the pioneers of the online beat-making scene — gaining an even larger following. Over the years, I’ve evolved not just in my skills and techniques but also in my understanding of what it means to be a true artist. It’s not just about making music, but also about self-discovery and inspiring others to reach for their potential.

The transition from being known primarily as a beat-maker to a multifaceted artist and producer was challenging. I had to constantly learn and adapt, pushing the boundaries of my creativity and confronting the stereotypes and limitations often imposed by the industry.

Today, I stand here as someone who has not only developed a signature sound but also cultivated a platform that allows me to share my journey and inspire others. My newest projects — ‘Boon Pop: The Mile High Theory’, ‘Black Floyd: Dark Side of the Boon’ and ‘Boon TV’ — are prime examples of my growth and dedication to my craft. They encapsulate my personality, experiences, lessons learned, and the evolution of my artistic persona.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road, but then again, the most rewarding paths often aren’t. One of the biggest challenges I faced was the transition from being seen primarily as a beat-maker to being recognized as a versatile artist and producer. This required not only evolving my sound but also changing the perceptions of my audience and peers within the industry — and dealing with plenty of criticism and rejection because of it.

Another significant struggle has been dealing with the fluctuations of the music industry itself. The digital revolution in music production and distribution, while opening up many doors, also brought about an extreme saturation of the market. It became increasingly challenging to stand out and maintain relevance in a rapidly changing environment.

Financial stability is another common challenge in the arts. Investing in production, rental spaces, equipment, software, services, marketing, and even dedicating time to perfect the craft without immediate returns is tough. There were moments of doubt and many times when I considered quitting altogether.

Emotionally, the journey has been taxing as well. The industry can be brutal, and the criticism at times harsh. Learning not to value the opinions about my art over my own, and validating myself was a critical lesson that took time to internalize.

However, every struggle brought a lesson and a chance to grow. I’ve learned to adapt and to stay true to my vision despite the challenges. Each hurdle has strengthened my resolve and deepened my passion for creating and expressing through my art.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a music producer, recording artist, filmmaker and creative visionary, specializing in blending a variety of genres to create projects that are uniquely my own. My work spans across hip-hop, soul, funk, rock, pop, jazz, blues and comedy, which resonates with a diverse audience.

Over the years, I’ve built a reputation not just for the quality of my music but also for my approach to the creative process, often sharing this through self-produced documentaries and behind-the-scenes content. This openness has helped me connect deeply with my audience and fellow creatives.

What I am most proud of is my ability to stay true to my artistic vision, even when faced with industry pressures and trends. All of my albums and videos are projects that not only showcase my growth as an artist but also represent the culmination of my experiences and influences — presented in a way that’s authentic and raw.

What sets me apart is my commitment to authenticity and my focus on the artistic journey as a form of personal and communal expression. I’m not just creating music; I’m telling stories, sharing experiences, and inspiring others to explore their own creative paths. My ability to blend sincerity and comedy with my music further distinguishes my work.

Ultimately, my goal is not just to produce music but to foster a community of creativity and inspiration. I strive to leave an impact that goes beyond the notes and rhythms.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’d love to take this moment to emphasize the importance of perseverance and authenticity in the creative industries. The journey of an artist is often glamorized, but the reality involves much hard work, self-doubt, and persistence. To anyone reading this who’s at the beginning of their creative path or facing challenges, remember that every great artist started somewhere, and every setback is an opportunity to learn and grow.

Lastly, I’m excited about the future projects I have in the works, including new music and videos that I believe will continue to inspire and entertain. I’m dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what I can create and sharing that journey with the world.

Thank you guys and to all the readers for your interest in my work. I’m grateful for the platform and the opportunity to connect with so many through my art. Stay tuned for more, and let’s continue to support and uplift each other in our artistic endeavors.
