Today we’d like to introduce you to Brad Hutchison
Hi Brad, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey with psychedelics began long before I understood their true potential from a wellness standpoint. Even in my early experiences, I felt an intrinsic connection to their transformative nature that went beyond recreational use.
When Colorado went through marijuana legalization, I watched with interest from a business perspective. I had started successful businesses before and knew this was a great opportunity. However, despite the clear opportunities in cannabis, I didn’t feel the same profound connection or conviction about its wellness potential as I did with psychedelics, so I stayed on the sidelines as many people I knew did some amazing things in that space. I never felt like I was missing out.
The COVID-19 pandemic became the turning point. As a business owner trying to navigate both parenting responsibilities and employee well-being during unprecedented times, I witnessed firsthand the mounting mental health crisis. This experience deeply concerned me and highlighted the urgent need for better mental health solutions in our immediate future. I still don’t think we’ve even scratched the surface of what that time did to our children.
This realization, combined with my long-standing connection to psychedelics, led me to envision what would become MindMatr Wellness and the NLYTN Microdosing Community. We’re just now launching, and in the final stages of building our platform with some amazing tools. Our mission is to bridge the gap between traditional wellness practices and the transformative potential of psychedelic medicine with technology and community, all while maintaining the sacred nature of these practices.
What excites me most about this journey is the opportunity to create something that goes beyond just business – it’s about building a platform that can genuinely help people in their wellness journey while honoring the profound nature of these medicines.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Amazingly, this has been smooth so far. There hasn’t been any pressure like there has with previous businesses because it has been on my time, in my way, with my own financing. I’ve taken the last 2 years to not only work on building the business, but to learn the business. In fact, the first year and a half of this was just education for me. I actually began by just growing my own mushrooms. Starting small at first and growing this as I learned – throwing away everything I created, starting with a new plan, and trying again. It was successful, it was not successful, it was something in the middle, but this time allowed me to truly connect to what I was ultimately working to build.
While the journey has been relatively smooth in terms of pressure and timeline, we’ve certainly faced our share of unique challenges. Building a business in the psychedelic wellness space requires navigating complex regulatory landscapes and challenging social perceptions. Our biggest hurdle has been growing website traffic and expanding our reach – it’s a delicate balance between building awareness while maintaining the integrity and seriousness of our wellness mission.
The learning curve has been steep, but intentionally so. Every batch of mushrooms that didn’t work out, every iteration of our business plan that needed revision, and every regulatory hurdle we’ve encountered has contributed to building something authentic and sustainable. Unlike traditional businesses where external pressure often forces rushed decisions, this self-financed, measured approach has allowed us to learn from our challenges rather than being derailed by them.
I believe this slower, more deliberate path has actually been our greatest advantage. It’s allowed us to build a foundation based on real understanding and experience, rather than just market opportunity.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m not sure what to select or how to answer this question. I’m definitely unique in my story. I like to say I’m a strange combination of a right brain and left brain kind of person. My history has been in all kinds of industries, all kinds of fields. I’m an artist, yet I love data. I’m an extrovert that loves networking, yet I love diving into code alone at a computer. I think these things are what has kept me working for myself rather than others. I’ve been able to affect every aspect of business. I don’t seem to function well in a silo for too long. I think I’m most proud of my ability to keep looking ahead as a visionary, and trying things as I go.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
This is one of those questions that I could answer for days on end. There’s not a single right answer or path that I could suggest. Simply, follow your heart wherever it takes you and don’t be afraid to change when your heart does.
