Rising Stars: Meet Chris McMahon of Denver Tech Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris McMahon.

Hi Chris, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a Police Officer for 12 years. I was dealing with some mental health issues and wasn’t at all satisfied with where my career was and where it was going. I did not feel like I was able to help people and serve anymore so I left the police department in 2023 and started working at a gym as a personal trainer with the ultimate goal of opening my own fitness studio. I realized it would likely be easier to buy an existing studio. During my search my wife suggested Cyclebar and initially I was skeptical but after doing the Saturday morning Performance ride I was hooked. I took over Cyclebar DTC in December of 2024. It has been a lot of fun working with a great team that has taught me a lot about the business and played a huge role in helping me navigate the struggles and challenges and of running my own business.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a very smooth road. I definitely thought I would be better at this than I am. The primary struggles have been changes in staffing. A lot of great people have had to move on and be replaced. I also struggle with setting up processes and procedures to keep things consistent and help new employees with smooth transitions. There have also been numerous technological struggles. After 8 months of operating the business I learned that have of the audio and networking equipment was not hooked up to surge protectors. The fire alarm went off, cut power and when it came back on there was a surge that fried several pieces of equipment. Fortunately I have had a very strong team behind me and we have been able to work through these challenges. Every bump in the road is challenge that helps me learn and be a better leader.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Cyclebar DTC we specialize in indoor cycling as the indoor cycling brand. We specialize in HIIT style cardio workouts with great music and a dance club like atmosphere. Many things set us apart. I constantly get comments from new riders on how we are the most welcoming and friendly fitness studio they have ever been to. Our workouts are more than just riding a bike. We use weights and resistance bands while riding to work your arms and core as well. We also offer nutrition coaching and an extremely supportive community to help with accountability and maintain a healthy social routine as well. At Cyclebar DTC we take great pride in our amazing instructors who work extremely hard to build supportive communities and excellent workouts everyday. The health of our riders is paramount and when they feel good we do too.

What makes you happy?
A lot of things make me happy. Some of the most significant things are playing with my children and getting hugs from them. In business it’s when I see other people feeling good and knowing that I was able to help and play a role. Fitness and nutrition are so important and when I set somebody up with a plan and they come back to me a few weeks later and say things like, they have more energy, less pain, or more confidence, I get really excited because I just want everybody to live their best life.
