Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Birke.
Hi Dana, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started making jewelry 15 years ago which just blows my mind! I had always been a huge lover of jewelry but never thought I would end up making it. A bead shop opened at the bottom of my road and my husband bought me classes there and the rest is history.
I fell in love with creating beautiful, sparkly things. The owner of the bead shop offered me a job at her sister store where I worked for a few years before I launched Dana Birke Designs Jewelry in 2012.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Quite honestly, I don’t think anyone ever has a smooth road! Starting any new endeavor is difficult. There are lots of obvious obstacles like getting into markets and shops, where to get your supplies, how to do your taxes etc., but the biggest one for me was confidence.
Boulder is full of so many talented people (and so many amazing jewelers) and I just didn’t think I could offer something that people would want to buy. Finding my own “sweet spot” has been the most challenging thing.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create handcrafted delicate jewelry using all hand-sourced gems, sterling silver, gold fill, and vermeil gold. I think I make jewelry that is perfect for every day but looks great with a little black dress! I can not tell you how many people tell me that they “wear that necklace every day.”
It’s easy to wear jewelry and honestly, it looks good on everyone. If something isn’t just right for someone, I will always tweak it. Make it a little longer, swap out a stone, use an alternative metal, etc. I am 100% committed to customer service and I think this is how I’ve managed to stay in business for so long.
I love working with clients and creating real relationships with them!
Networking and finding a mentor can have a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
The best mentors I have found are my “Carny Friends” or “Friendors” as we call each other.
Doing markets is a great way to find community. Most artists are very generous with their knowledge and experience whether it’s the best markets to do, where to get great supplies, or sometimes just to vent or commiserate on the crazy way you’ve chosen to make a living!
