Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Kent.
Hi Danielle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m the owner of Danielle Kent Birth Photography! I am a birth photographer and doula serving Northern Colorado. I was born in Canada and raised in South Carolina. My husband and I were longing for a change of pace and scenery, so we loaded up our two dogs and handful of belongings and headed for the front range 5 years ago. We haven’t looked back!
I took a deep dive into the hobby of photography about four years ago and knew I wanted to turn it into a career. I photographed just about everything, from weddings, to wildlife, to seniors, to boudoir. Problem was, I did not feel particularly passionate about any of these subjects. At the same time, I have always been fascinated with pregnancy, birth, and motherhood. One day, my friend showed me photographs from her home birth, and a light bulb immediately went off in my head. I knew in that moment that I was meant to be a birth photographer.
That is when Danielle Kent Birth Photography was born. I now provide birth photography and doula services in tandem, and am affectionately known as a “doulatog.”
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been some struggles along the way! I found out I was pregnant with my first baby a few days after deciding to open my business. Building my business from the ground up while navigating an extremely difficult pregnancy was challenging.
Finding my first few clients was also difficult. I knew I wanted to photograph births, but at first, with a limited portfolio, it was hard to find parents willing to invite me into their sacred birth space. I am eternally grateful for those first few families that took a chance on me. Additionally, I started birth work smack dab in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. Because of hospital restrictions, I was limited in births I was able to attend and had to start of mostly attending home or birth center births.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in birth photography! My favorite things to photograph are sweet moments between the couple during labor, as well as the mom’s face as she holds her baby for the first time. I love to create bold, dramatic edits with deep blacks. My work is completely documentary. Meaning, I never ask my clients to pose a certain way or smile for the camera, I simply photograph candid moments and events as they happen naturally.
What’s next?
Right now, I photograph and provide doula support part-time, so my plans for the future are to grow into a full-time, thriving business! I plan to become a Certified Lactation Counselor to help parents with breastfeeding. I have also begun learning about videography and would like to add a video to my birth packages in the near future.
