Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Boulos.
Hi Elizabeth, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am an accidental entrepreneur, although it’s in my genes. My great grandfather and grandfather were both entrepreneurs, and my dad opened a surf shop in Maine in his early 20’s. Before venturing into entrepreneurship, I worked for over 15 years in marketing, branding, product development, and sustainability for food retailers and consumer products companies, leading teams, strategy, and programs in the US & Europe. This experience brought me exposure to many facets of food and personal care products and ignited my deep interest in all-things ingredients,
In 2019, I decided to take the risk of leaving my stable corporate job, driven by what I’d learned and a passion for sharing that knowledge with others. Today I am an educator dedicated to truth and transparency around ingredients, toxins, and products, their impact on human and environmental health, and how they are marketed to consumers. On the side, I’m converting a school bus into a tiny home using as many eco-friendly and low toxin materials as possible, providing a great opportunity to continue to learn and practice my passion.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being an entrepreneur, whether full-time or part-time, isn’t easy. I’ve had many stops and starts and still do.
Past struggles included finding the balance of working a corporate job while building my Beautycounter side hustle and leaving the comforts of being an employee to become a business owner. Now focusing on my business full-time, I, probably like many, find life on social media to be challenging at times. It’s a world that brings a lot of joy and connectivity but can also be overwhelming and a tough place to find a unique voice that resonates with a target audience, especially when you are focused on education and sharing topics that aren’t always lighthearted.
For positivity, I’ve found support in the Facebook community The Denver Boss Babe Collective, a group I currently administrate. It’s a place for female-identifying and nonbinary entrepreneurs and those who want to shop small business, to interact, problem-solve, encourage, and learn from one another, and is a great place to build connections.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an educator, consultant, and partner. I help people to better understand the world of consumer products so they can navigate it with more confidence and make informed decisions. Sometimes this leads to big lifestyle changes, other times they are small, but I’ve found when people learn something that touches on their value system, it always results in meaningful change. So many of us want to do better for our health or the environment, or both, but it’s overwhelming to know where to begin. I connect with people wherever they’re at – from those brand-new to reducing toxins, to others who’ve already begun their health journey or find themselves wanting to make changes for specific health diagnoses.
I work with both businesses and consumers, offering complimentary 20-minute consultations to get the conversation started. I cover a range of product categories including food, household cleaners, and personal care, creating customized safer, and eco-holistic product recommendations based on budgets and needs. Anyone can request a consult by completing my online form.
In addition to consultations, I provide a variety of free education in my Facebook Group: The Ingredient Insiders & on Instagram @the.ingredient.insider. I also love doing workshops and talking on podcasts and look forward to bringing more of that to life in the future.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
My innate curiosity has been crucial to my success. The world of consumer products is always changing. As you can imagine, companies are always looking to capitalize on trends and consumer values, which evolve over time. It sometimes feels like a race as one side works to figure out the other. It takes passion, time, and a great deal of curiosity to stay on top of the latest trends, consumer buying behavior, research, claims, and business practices and bring that information to the general public.
