Rising Stars: Meet Elizabeth Schauer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Schauer.

Elizabeth Schauer

Hi Elizabeth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For the first Seven years of my professional working life I taught Art and Design Internationally. Throughout the United States, Albania, and Mexico. This time was transformative, and very powerful. I gained so much experience teaching children from all walks of life. Spending two years in Albania made me realize what kind of educator I want to be and how I want my kids to learn. Most recently my time in Mexico allowed me to become my own artist. Develop my creative voice and help my students do the same. Through community murals and planned trips to Frida Kahlo’s home I found so much of myself with my students. It was an absolute joy teaching my students in Mexico.

Mexico City offered me so much, including photographing retreats. Shooting healers and capturing their most authentic selves inspired me to change. I began to realize the full call to step into my artist role.

A year ago I said goodbye to my students and fully committed to my painting and photography. It has been the best decision of my life. I am eternally grateful for the journey that has led me here, to my studio in Colorado.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest obstacle has been my own fear. Because the opposite of fear is creativity. And if I’m living in a world of creativity, there is no room for my fear taking the wheel and driving. Learning to live with my fear in the passenger seat instead of the driver has been huge.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an oil painter and photographer. With my photography I work primarily with women healers. We create this visual narrative that shows who they are, captivates their audience, and reminds the world of ancient wisdom.

My oil paintings deal with the shadow realms that women inhabit. Based on visions from a few weeks in the jungles of Peru, I began to paint serpents and women that show powerful transformations.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Lessons have been big as an artist. It’s hard to not take things personally because your art is so close to you! A huge lesson has been letting go the little things. When someone doesn’t choose your art or photography. Letting that go.
