Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Oostra.
Hi Erin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, I’m Erin Oostra, a contemporary painter and visual designer with a creative journey that spans the scenic landscapes of Washington State and the majestic vistas of Colorado. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, I made my way to the vibrant Greater Seattle area at the age of ten.
My artistic roots took hold during my studies in graphic design at the Seattle Central Creative Academy, paving the way for a dynamic career in product design and marketing with esteemed companies such as Nordstrom, PicMonkey, and Shutterstock.
While my professional path was shaped by the dynamic world of visual design, it was the unexpected love affair with the outdoors that unfolded during my college years that truly defined my artistic expression. Hiking became a portal to a deep appreciation for nature’s beauty, setting the stage for my journey into contemporary painting.
In addition to my connection with the Pacific Northwest, a new chapter unfolded with frequent visits to Divide, Colorado, where my parents now call home. The breathtaking landscapes of the Rocky Mountains have become a second muse, inspiring a collection of Colorado-inspired art that I passionately create during my visits.
As a painter, I seamlessly blend my strategic experience in visual design with a love for bold, abstract strokes. My latest works capture not only the awe and respect I hold for the dangerous beauty of nature but also reflect the diverse landscapes that have influenced my creative spirit in both Washington State and Colorado.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey has been both exhilarating and challenging, marked by significant shifts from a secure and successful design career to the venture of opening my art gallery. Transitioning from the predictability of a reliable design career to the unpredictable yet rewarding realm of entrepreneurship has been a substantial leap.
While my background in graphic design provided a solid foundation, navigating the intricate landscape of the art world presented its own set of hurdles. The most recent challenge has been establishing and managing my art gallery—an ambitious endeavor that demanded a different set of skills and strategies.
The road may not have been entirely smooth, but the sense of success has been palpable. Through perseverance and adaptability, I’ve been able to position myself as an artistic leader in my community. Playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of my town’s art scene is a source of immense pride and fulfillment.
Becoming a creative force within the community has not only allowed me to sell my creations but has also provided a platform to support and uplift other local artists. It’s gratifying to contribute to the growth of the artistic landscape, fostering an environment where creativity thrives and artists can flourish.
Currently, I am actively working on refining strategies to enhance the gallery’s success and to further solidify my role as a key influencer in the local art community. The journey is ongoing, and the prospects of continued success and collaboration with fellow artists fuel my enthusiasm for the future.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a contemporary landscape artist who consistently explores and creates. I’m renowned for my contemporary mountainscapes, oceanscapes, and abstract art inspired by the land around us, characterized by bold and fluid compositions that resonate with a modern minimalist audience.
In addition to capturing the dangerous beauty of the United States, I love to paint all locations, showcasing the diversity of landscapes that inspire me. Leveraging my design background, I also create contemporary digital collages, adding a unique dimension to my artistic expression.
One-on-one collaborations are a cherished aspect of my artistic process. I thrive on working closely with clients to create custom pieces that honor their favorite places, ensuring a personal connection to the art.
This personalized approach, combined with my transition from a successful graphic design career to managing my art gallery, sets me apart as an artist who seamlessly blends versatility with a commitment to fostering a vibrant, contemporary artistic community.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
One surprising aspect that many may not know about me is that I never intended to have an art career. Graphic design initially became my career path because I had always been told that pursuing art might not be financially lucrative.
It wasn’t until my college years that a love for hiking emerged as a way to step away from the computer. Little did I know, this newfound passion would lead me to discover a deep love for painting. The unplanned journey into the art world has been a fulfilling surprise and a testament to the unpredictable and transformative nature of one’s creative path.
