Rising Stars: Meet Jake DeMarco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake DeMarco.

Hi Jake, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started writing and play music when I was about 10, and since then it’s always been my dream to play music professionally and always be doing what I love. I met some kids my age with the same interest and we started my first band in middle school. From there I met more people and got me more connections and more opportunities and as I’ve gotten older, my dreams become more of a reality every day.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any area of work, there has been a lot of difficult times. It’s very interesting to see how the issues in this industry differ from those in others. With music, it’s very independent. So, the struggles can be really tough because it’s all on you most of the time, but that makes the payoff in the end even better to know you overcame so much on your own to get there. On the other end, there is a lot of self-discipline to practice every day, keep your goals in check, market yourself, etc. because there’s usually not someone to tell you to go do those things.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am primarily a bassist/sessions musician, but I find the most enjoyment in writing and performing music. To me, it’s a very interesting balance of work and playing because both sides benefit off each other. When I’m hired to do a studio session or a run of shows, it allows me to take the back seat and be strictly a bass player. But with my own project, “In Plain Air”, it’s much more of a hands-on experience. We are all not only playing, writing, and performing all the songs, but we also work as the booking agent, manager, PR, etc. When I’m out with a gig that I’m hired to do, it gives me a first-hand look into the music industry which I take home and apply to my own work.
