Rising Stars: Meet Jason Alfaro of Thornton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Alfaro.

Jason, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After finishing my five years in the Navy, I came home in 2022 with no real plan. School felt like the only clear next step. Right before I left San Diego where I was stationed. I bought a Sony camera off a friend. At the time, I didn’t think much of it. I just figured it’d be fun to snap some photos.

But everything changed on April 17th, 2023. That’s the day I realized photography wasn’t just something to pass the time—it was what I was meant to do. From that point on, I jumped on every opportunity to shoot, to learn, and to build something real out of this. It wasn’t easy. I took a ton of photos, most of which didn’t make the cut. But every missed shot taught me something, and every small win pushed me forward. Now, I’m building this into a business—and I’m just getting started.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was definitely a learning curve, but it forced me to prepare for whatever was coming next. I went from barely knowing how to use a camera to photographing major artists. And it’s not just about learning the technical side—it’s about figuring out your style, your niche, and what sets your work apart.

Another challenge was getting clients. It’s tough to get people to trust you enough to pay when you’re just starting out. I spent almost a year working for free, building my portfolio and reputation. But over time, it started to pay off. Now, I’m working with clients who not only see the value in what I do—but are willing to invest in it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in digital media—everything from photo to video, and even graphic design. Most people know me for my photography, but lately I’ve been getting more comfortable in the world of videography. Out of everything I do, I’m definitely most proud of my photo work. It’s taken me places, opened doors, and has shown real growth over the past two years.

Every photographer sees the world differently, and everyone has their own style. What sets me apart is the way I tell stories through my photos. I’m not just snapping a moment—I’m capturing a feeling, a narrative, something you can connect with.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memories were always the ones I spent with my dad. One that really sticks with me is when we’d head outside to toss the baseball around—just the two of us. Afterward, we’d go down to the basement and dig through his collection of old baseball cards. We’d spend hours down there, flipping through stacks of history, talking about the players, the stats, the stories behind each card. Those moments meant everything to me.
