Rising Stars: Meet John Simpkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Simpkins

Hi John, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My musical journey began in the halls of Horace Mann Middle School, where I joined the band. While he enjoyed playing, it wasn’t until a life-changing school assembly that music truly ignited a passion within him. That spark came in the form of local jazz legend Ron Miles. Ron’s visit to Horace Mann, complete with an inspiring talk and performance, left a lasting impression on me. I learned that Ron taught at Metropolitan State University, and a seed was firmly planted. Determined to one day study with this incredible musician, I convinced his brother to let him join his band, Askimbo.

This marked the beginning of My relentless pursuit of honing my craft. Denver’s vibrant music scene provided fertile ground for his growth. I found invaluable mentorship through opportunities like playing in the C.E.C. all-city band with Ron Jolly, Art Street with Gerald Endsley, and taking private lessons with the esteemed Keith Harms. This journey eventually led me to perform with Keith in the Atomic Brass Project.

My dedication paid off. I achieved my dream of studying with Ron Miles and graduated from Metropolitan State University with a degree in Music in Fine Arts. Askimbo, the band that had fueled my early passion, went on to become a Denver mainstay, playing roughly 2,000 shows together and releasing four albums.

As life took a more family-oriented turn, I transitioned into sharing my passion by teaching private lessons and repairing instruments at the beloved local music store, Flesher-Hinton Music. But my own music-making never stopped. These days, you can find me performing alongside my brother Dave Simpkins in the group Muchly Suchwise. I also continue to explore my creative vision through my solo jazz project, John Simpkins and the Paid Acquantances.

And to top it all off, all three bands’ albums are available on all major streaming platforms, so you can experience Denver’s own John Simpkins wherever you listen to music.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The past few years have been a tempest of loss for many, and my life has been no exception. The shadow of COVID-19 claimed several mentors and bandmates, and the devastating loss of my brother to a fentanyl overdose two years ago sent shockwaves through my world.
Music has always been my sanctuary, a place where raw emotions can find form and expression. It’s been a lifeline, helping me navigate the tumultuous waters of grief. In the quiet moments with my instrument, I find solace and a sense of purpose. While the pain of loss is still very present, I hope that my music is a testament to the healing power of art, offering a space for others to process their own grief and find beauty in the midst of sorrow.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Balancing the roles of teacher, performer, and repair technician has been instrumental in my growth as a trumpet player. Teaching has been a particular source of inspiration, keeping my own musical flame burning bright. I find great joy in sharing my passion with students of all ages and abilities, tailoring my instruction to meet their unique needs. By creating a nurturing learning environment, I’ve not only helped countless students find their musical voice but have also deepened my own understanding and appreciation for the art form.

As a trumpet player and repair technician, I’ve had the privilege of serving the Denver music community in a variety of ways. While I spend countless hours tending to other people’s instruments, it’s those small tweaks and modifications to my own horn that have helped shape my sound. This played a large role in giving me the confidence to put out two solo albums.

Building and maintaining relationships with fellow musicians over the past three decades has been incredibly rewarding. Sharing the stage with friends and inspiring the next generation of musicians through teaching and instrument repair has created a fulfilling and stable life.

How do you think about luck?
The music industry often paints a picture of fame and fortune, but I’ve found happiness and success on a different path. While I haven’t become a household name, I’ve built a sustainable career doing what I love. Surrounding myself with talented musicians, mentors, and students has been instrumental to my journey. Denver and the surrounding Mountain community’s vibrant music scene have provided countless opportunities, and I feel incredibly fortunate to call this city home.
