Rising Stars: Meet Jonathan Goldman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Goldman.

Hi Jonathan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I come from New Jersey. My father was a medical doctor–a pioneer in plastic surgery. I attended Boston University where I graduated with a degree in “Broadcasting and Film”. I did some graduate work in journalism, but my main focus was playing in pretty well known local rock n’ roll bands. I went to Florida where I worked as a disc jockey at a station Y106 that would pioneer “mellow rock” music and become the #1 station in the Orlando area. Desiring something different, I returned to Boston, where I started a newspaper called “International Times” and then began playing in another rock n roll band. One night in 1979, on stage at a side side bar in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, I had a revelatory experience. I walked back with the band from break, strapped on my Fender Stratocaster and begin singing and playing. As I looked out at the audience, I began aware that the ambiance of the club was one of negativity and violence–no doubt because of all the alcohol and intoxicants that were being imbibed. But I also became aware that the music I was creating was helping induce this ambiance. And I had the thought: “I wonder if music could be used to make people feel good.” It wasn’t a deep thought, but it was a total shift of consciousness. Before that it had always been “Look at me. Aren’t I good”. Instead, for some reason, I became aware of the effects of the sound and the field it was creating.

Within a week, that thought shifted about 10 degrees and became: “I wonder if sound could be used to heal?”. From there doors just began to open. I took a workshop with a woman named Sarah Benson (my book “The 7 Secrets of Sound Healing” from Hay House was dedicated to her as ‘The Divine Mother of Sound Healing’). I had an extraordinary and transformational experience in that workshop which truly showed me the power of sound to shift consciousness. From there, I founded the Sound Healers Association which for over 10 years held monthly meetings in the Boston area featuring speakers who were renowned in the field of music and sound healing–doctors, musicians, scientists, healers–all sorts of amazing people. I became convinced that this was a truly valid area of study and entered Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts where I created a self study program researching the uses of sound and music for healing. I graduated with this degree in the mid 1980’s. I took my record company, Spirit Music, and transformed it from a new wave company to a New Age music company. and began producing music for healing and transformation. Then I moved to the mountains outside of Boulder, Colorado where I wrote my first book, “Healing Sounds”. This became quite a well known book in the field of Alternative Health. I began teaching workshops throughout the United States and Europe. A few years later, one of my albums, “Chakra Chants” went on to win the Visionary Award for “Album of the Year” and “Best Healing Music Album”. Since then, I’ve continued teaching, writing and recording music. I have over 30 award winning recordings–one of which was a Grammy nominee. These include “The Divine Name”, “Frequencies: Sounds of Healing”, “Reiki Chants”, “De-Stress” and “Sounds of Light”. I’ve continued writing as well, both by myself and with my wife Andi (“Chakra Frequencies” and “The Humming Effect”). I’m considered one of the founding pioneers of Sound Healing. There’s much more that could be said.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Life is full of challenges, but I’d suggest that my road has been relatively smooth. There are phenomenon of living that occur and can not be avoided–some good, some not so good. Birth, death, all the things that prove difficult and wonderful. I would offer that my road, when I was involved with playing rock n’ roll, was one that may have been quite rocky. But gratefully, once I discovered the power of sound to heal and transform, this road became much more smoothed out. I’ve found for example, that it’s possible to used music as a tool for deep relaxation and consciousness expansion and not have to rely on artificial substances to do this. In fact, I’ve created lots of different recordings that have helped not only myself, but many thousands (perhaps millions) of other people release stress, tensions and anxiety and experience peace and relaxation. I’ll also acknowledge that I’ve received numerous testimonials to the healing power of my Healing Sounds. For this I am truly grateful.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am considered one of the founding pioneers of sound healing. I have over 30 award winning albums designed to use sound for health and transformation. One of the albums I produced was nominated for a Grammy (“Tibetan Master Chants” by Lama Tashi”). My books have become well known in the field of alternative health throughout the world. My first book, “Healing Sounds” just had its 30th Anniversary release. My recordings often feature both knowledge of the ancient uses of sound and music to transform, as well as new scientific inroads into how sound can heal the body, mind and spirit. They utilize different tones, mantras, frequencies, psycho-acoustic effects and more to create powerful and positive shifts and changes. One of my first albums, “Dolphin Dreams”, was created back in the late 1980’s for the birth of my son. It featured the first commercially available recording with the sounds of dolphins in it. It also had the sounds of ocean, choral voices, whales, Schumann Resonance, quartz crystals and much more. Many of my recordings have had multiple layers of different types of sounds–environmental effects, mantras, specific frequencies and intervals, subliminal material, binaural beats, sacred chants, and anything else that worked. My recording of “Chakra Chants” in 2000 utilized all this, became one of the most popular New Age recordings and won the Visionary Awards for “Best Healing Music” and “Album of the Year”. It’s become a kind of prototype of numerous albums that have followed it. Often, I’ll listen to my music on Spotify or some other platform that will be followed by someone else’s music and sometimes I can’t tell them apart, my techniques have been copied so well. I’m grateful that this has happened. With my teachings, I have produced some material that has now become accepted as being part of the vibrational medicine tradition, such as my use of aligning the specific vowel sounds with the chakras to produce the phenomenon of “Vowels As Mantras”.

I like to do things that have not been done before. My wife Andi and I created the book, “The Humming Effect” which was the first professionally published book on humming. It’s won numerous awards and really brought humming to the public. I now see material on humming on YouTube and other media. Johns Hopkins Medical School even utilizes the book. What a gift. I have dedicated myself to help bring awareness of the power of sound and music to the people. And I like to think I’m relatively successful with this. I have founded the Sound Healers Association (www.soundhealersassociation.org), which is the oldest organization (founded in 1982) dedicated to networking and educating people to the power of sound to heal and transform. Spirit Music, Inc., (also known as Healing Sounds–www.healingsounds.com), continues to produce music for healing and transformation. We also produce our own line of tuning forks for healing that are of the highest quality material for deepest resonance and we produce educational videos, etc. as well. For the past 25 years, we have produced World Sound Healing Day, which takes place on Valentine’s Day and involves thousands of people simultaneously intoning sound for the purpose of bringing deep healing to the planet. These are all things I’m proud of and grateful that I have been among the first to do these things. The modern sound healing movement is expanding at an extraordinary rate and I like to believe my work has been a model for much of it. I invite you to come visit www.healingsounds.com to experience a vast array of sound healing information, techniques and tools. There’s lots of free downloadable material and there are also excellent online sound healing programs for you to experience.

What are your plans for the future?
Sound healing as a phenomenon continues to grow. It currently is understood by many as being sound baths, but of course, it is much, much more than that. The simple continuation of all that I have achieved over the last 50 years helping create and manifest the field of sound healing is enough. There is so much more that is possible and available. I want to keep educating and informing people about my experience with how sound can be used to heal and transform. And I want to continue focusing on the expansive energy of sound healing, taking it from a personal level–how sound can heal us on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level and bring this to a planetary level–how we can collectively use intentionalized sound to help shift the vibratory field of the planet. This phenomenon of using collective consciousness to positively influence and balance the planet, incidentally, is now being validated by science, through the work of the Global Consciousness Project and others scientific programs. I cover this in a number of my books, including my latest; “Ascension Harmonics”. This coming February, on Feb. 14, 2027, we will be celebrating the 25th Annual World Sound Healing Day, These are just continuations of already existing projects. Bringing them to further manifestation is quite fulfilling. For those interested in this event, please visit: www.worldsoundhealingday.org
I like to say “We heal the planet, we heal ourselves. We heal ourselves and we heal the planet. We have a choice. We can make a difference.”
