Rising Stars: Meet K-Cori

Today we’d like to introduce you to K-Cori.

Hi K-Cori, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
From a young age, I have always been very creative and artistic. I would think outside the box and discover the bulk of my happiness stemmed from the arts as well. I spent a large part of my life dancing ballet for six years. Ballet was a passion of mine and a career I was going to pursue for the rest of my life. But, one year for Christmas my parents gifted me a ukulele and my passion for writing music began. I have been writing music since I was thirteen years old and I have not stopped since. I started to hone in and focus on singing and writing music in April of 2021. The first song that I wrote with the intention of release is entitled ‘Seventeen’. Since releasing ‘Seventeen’ I have released my first EP entitled ‘Array’ and started performing around the Colorado area. I have released many singles on all platforms and I am very excited to release more music this year. Music has allowed me to express myself in the most poetic and sentimental sense of being. My intention when creating and releasing music has always been and will continue to be to heal others and create a sense of escape for every listener. I always feel so fulfilled hearing the ways my music has healed people or made them feel something. My only goal for music is for a large mass of people to listen in hopes of uplifting and entertaining them with my variety of sounds.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Pursuing a career in the music industry is not easy and has required me to be diligent and smart. I have learned to not take criticism personally and focus on the bigger picture. It can be easy for me to get caught up and marinate in the low points of my work. Those low points are hateful commentary, self-criticism, and even the frustration of not hitting the right note. So, what I tend to do when I am feeling low is write music. Writing music has been my saving grace and is a source of therapy. So, when I am feeling low or down about myself or my music, I write. If I do not write music, I then turn to my family and friends. It is vital to have a supportive and honest team while pursuing any career. My friends and family are my teams. They lift me up when I am down and don’t sugarcoat anything. I know that I can turn to them for honest commentary and advice and with the confidence that their intentions are true. They want to see me succeed as much as I do so I trust them and their advice. However, I have learned that it is vital to be my own saving grace. I tend not to rely on others too heavily and make sure to heal myself and not rely on people’s words to heal me. This is what helps me swiftly go from a low state of mind to a high one. I understand that I am in control of my body and mind. So, how I feel is up to me and should not be heavily influenced by the situations and people around me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I knew when entering the music industry and crafting an image for myself that I did not want to be put into a box. Since I am so creative and I always write music in different genres, I know I would be doing a mass disservice to myself to only create and present myself as an artist under one genre. I have created and released music in the R&B genre, hip-hop, punk rock, and many more. I understand it is difficult to succeed as a music artist when people can’t label you as one thing or one type of artist but I intend to defy that and succeed as an artist of my many genres. My intention is to make music that heals others and in order for me to do that I need to create music for every type of person. Not every person likes R&B or Pop. So, I decided to create music in most genres and create songs with a variety of sounds in hopes of healing a variety of people. One of the most fun and energizing songs I have written and recorded is F Boy. F Boy is a rock song that I wrote last year and is available to stream on all platforms. This song is so much fun to perform and I can’t wait to release more music in the rock genre this year as well.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
When I was younger, I was very quiet and kept to myself always. I didn’t have a large group of friends and spent a lot of time with only one friend or two. I am a military brat so I was always moving to different states so my friendships never lasted long. I was interested in robotics and different Stem clubs, but I was always isolated in those clubs since I was always the only black girl participating. The only time I could truly be myself or express who I was, was through theater. Acting is a huge passion of mine and another avenue of the arts I am also pursuing. I was placed in a gifted and talented program in fourth grade and through that program, I was able to perform on stage and play a variety of different characters in productions. Since I was so shy, many people were surprised by the amount of talent and energy I had when performing. I loved acting so much and I decided to keep pursuing it while focusing on singing as well. I was in a short film in middle school and continued to act throughout high school as well.
