Rising Stars: Meet Kari Geha

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kari Geha.

Kari Geha

Hi Kari, We’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. Before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I began photographing and interviewing bands for a music magazine! It was so much fun and helped me learn to take photos in ever-changing lighting situations and low light. A couple of friends asked me if I did wedding photography, and they were willing to take a chance on a newbie. From there, I fell in love with wedding photography and furthered my education on everything wedding photography-related! I eventually moved to Hawaii and shot weddings year-round. I learned a lot during this time and moved back to the mainland after a couple of years. I continued doing wedding photography with a full-time job until my clientele base got large enough to quit my 9 to 5. Best decision I have ever made! 15 years later, and I’m still documenting weddings and elopements!

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It never is 🙂 It took a lot of hard work! I worked upwards of 60 hours a day at some of my 9 to 5 jobs, and then I came home and edited or had shoots after work. Sometimes, I would edit until 3 am and then wake up for work again at 5:30 am and repeat. It took a lot of learning and figuring out where I fit in the wedding photography world. I need to find my editing style, shooting style, and overall management of a business on my own. It’s never a smooth road; it’s more like a 4 x 4 road with many ups and downs and learning experiences, haha.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in weddings, elopements, and events. I also do family photos, headshots, and commercial work! Many of the latter come from previous wedding clients moving to new jobs or starting their families. I’m proud of how hard I worked to get where I am today. I truly care that my clients love their photos and are as timeless as possible. Most of my clients become friends of mine, and everyone wants their friends to be happy. 🙂

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I always loved visiting our mountain property with my mom, dad, brother, and sister. We would camp, cook on the fire, hike, and ride ATVs all day. That is why I love photographing adventure elopements so much! Take me to a trail, and let’s have a picnic!
