Rising Stars: Meet Kayla Bara of Brighton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Bara.

Kayla, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always loved all things beauty. Growing up, I loved watching my mom put her makeup on, take it off at night, and go through her skincare routine. That’s really where it all started for me — I was just fascinated by it.
Later in life, my mom was diagnosed with melanoma and eventually passed. Watching her go through that completely changed my outlook on skin and health. I originally wanted to go into oncology and even became a CNA, working in hospice care since that’s where my mom spent her last days. But I quickly realized that environment just wasn’t for me.
That’s when I found my niche in skincare. I started esthetics school in 2019, but due to COVID, I wasn’t able to get licensed until 2021. It was a long road, but it taught me a lot about patience and resilience. Since then, I’ve worked in the med spa setting, and I’ve fallen in love with what I do.
I’m certified in just about everything under my license, but lasers and injections are my jam. The structure of the skin and the science behind it absolutely fascinate me. I’m big on education and prevention — I always tell my clients, “Wear the damn SPF!” It’s more than just a saying; it’s a message that comes from my mom’s story.
I’m also an esthetics instructor now, which has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career. When I started out, I had a hard time finding my way in the industry, so I really want to be that helping hand for others. I want my students to see that this field is so abundant — there’s truly a place and a face for everyone.
My mission is to put ethics back into esthetics and to pour love into people who may be struggling with their skin or just trying to find their place. Because to me, it’s not just about beauty — it’s about confidence, care, and compassion.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my biggest challenges was having to quit my job as a case manager to fully devote myself to esthetics school. I couldn’t work while I was in school, so it was a big leap of faith. My husband — who was my boyfriend at the time — really encouraged me to “just jump” and trust the process, and I’m so glad I did.
Another major challenge was losing my mom to melanoma. It was the hardest experience of my life, but I chose to turn that pain into purpose. It taught me strength, compassion, and the importance of prevention — lessons that I now pass on to my clients and students every day.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What sets me apart is my heart and the love I have for what I do. I’m genuinely passionate about this field and about every person who trusts me with their skin. I take the time to really get to know my clients on a deeper level, because what we do as estheticians can be such a vulnerable experience. My goal is always to create a space where people feel safe, cared for, and truly seen — not just treated.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I just want people to know that this industry is truly abundant — there’s room for everyone. Whether it’s clients looking for help with their skin or students finding their place in esthetics, I want to be a reminder that you can always start over and chase what lights you up. My mission will always be to put ethics back into esthetics, to lead with love, and to help others feel confident in their own skin — inside and out.
