Rising Stars: Meet Kaylee Novotny of Aurora, CO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylee Novotny

Hi Kaylee, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a wife, mom of 3 littles, registered nurse, and now a certified ISR instructor. I have always had a passion for helping others. As a nurse, I saw how easily drownings could happen. I also saw the devastating tragedy it brought to families. When our oldest child was born, I started looking into swim lesson options and that is when I found ISR. We enrolled our oldest into lessons when she was 11 months old. I absolutely fell in love with ISR when I saw how my baby, who only spoke a few words and had just begun walking, was able to rescue herself if the situation ever arose. I knew I wanted to make it my mission to help kids learn the ability to self rescue as well. Life got busy and we had 3 kids before, I was able to make my dream come true. When our youngest was 9months old we made the commitment as a family to get me certified as a ISR instructor. I have been teaching for the past 2 years and absolutely love that I am able to help kids learn to swim and self rescue.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Becoming and being an ISR instructor is definitely not always a smooth road. Between struggling to find pool space to teach out of to educating kids and parents on the importance of water safety. There is always a challenge that arises.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in teaching babies and young kids to swim and self rescue in water should the need arise. There are so many different swim schools out there, however in most traditional programs you won’t start seeing results for years. With ISR, lessons are structured to teach your child to learn to swim/self rescue in about a 6-8week time period. I have kids who start lessons that are terrified to put their face in the water, and within a few short weeks they are swimming, rolling to their back to rest and breath, then swimming again, and repeating that pattern until they are able to reach safety.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was spending the entire summer swimming at the pool.
