Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelise Wilrye.
Hi Kelise, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up, I had always felt as though the Denver area possessed a very creative energy. Being surrounded by creative peers in my school and work environments, I was inspired to pursue an art-oriented career. My love for the Denver music scene and attending concerts stayed with me even after moving cities and ultimately inspired me to get involved with the music industry. I decided to combine my love for music with my interest in visual arts and begin concert photography. Since then, I’ve photographed performances of Jean Dawson, Sophie Powers, TV Girl, Phoneboy, Veeze, The Isley Brothers, etc. Eventually, my passion for concert photography evolved into passion for fashion photography, and I’ve now created content for Denver & Las Vegas based clothing brands. Being able to carry the creative essence of Denver with me wherever I end up in the world is truly an accolade to me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has absolutely been challenging; learning is a never ending process. Additionally, I began photography at age 16 and there were multiple instances where I wasn’t taken seriously due to my age back when I was first starting out.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a photographer who now specializes in 35mm film (and occasionally shoots digital). I believe I’m most known for my fashion and portraiture work. I’m most proud of my ability to create eye-catching images on a vintage film camera, which also sets me apart from others that prefer digital.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
One of my close friends that I attended school with in Colorado deserves credit in my journey. She has been so incredibly supportive and encouraging to my work which inspires me to keep working. All of the clothing brands and models who I’ve collaborated with as well as the managers of artists/venues that have helped me acquire media passes for shows also deserve a huge thank you also.
