Rising Stars: Meet Lawren Bennett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lawren Bennett.

Hi Lawren, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I formally started my dog training business in 2015. The motivation to start the business came from my wife and the birth of our first child. My corporate job did not provide me the flexibility to help with my daughter and family obligations. Quite frankly, I was burned out and done working a traditional 8-5 job. Informally, I had always been described as the “dog whisperer” and had a knack for working with dogs. 

My friends and neighbors were always asking for help with their pups. It was a lightbulb moment when my wife said, “Why don’t you start a dog training business?” “You are always helping people with their dogs…why not make it your job?” It did not take long for us to get the ball rolling. We quickly decided on Walking with Walter Dog Training to pay homage to my English Bulldog, Walter. He inspired me to take training seriously and expand my knowledge of dogs and dog training. Since the business’s inception, I have taken many courses & classes that have given me tremendous insight into how dogs learn and what motivates them. 

One of my greatest accomplishments thus far has been receiving my NePoPo® Gold Training Certification. I am also extremely proud to have maintained a Google 5-star rating for over close to 10 years, my tagline is: “I train dogs and teach humans.” That embodies what I believe as a dog trainer. Owners I work with need help with communicating with their dogs. Dogs are the easy part of training. My goal is to empower owners and show them that they can have the dog they have always wanted. They just need some professional guidance. 

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have been very fortunate to have avoided any major speed bumps along the way. Most businesses suffered when COVID hit. I, on the other hand, was busier than ever. 

Why? One of two reasons. Many people went out and got dogs and needed help, or dog owners were home with their dogs more than ever and realized they needed help with behaviors that had been overlooked or ignored. 

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in family pet dogs and sport dog training. I am known for helping owners better understand their dogs and improving their relationships and quality of life. My unique approach to training helps me stand out from the crowd. I always say, “I train dogs and teach humans.” 90% of training is coaching owners. 

Not all owners want to or need to be dog trainers. However, they need to understand the basic principles of dog training and what motivates their dog. My background is in sales, and customer service has been beneficial in my day-to-day dealings with clients and their dogs. I love teaching and educating owners. The programs I offer are unlike most in the metro area simply because I am involved from the beginning and invested in the dogs’ and clients’ success, and my training programs are customized for each client. 

There is nothing cookie-cutter about what I do. My clients need to get an amazing return on their investment. My success has come as a result of my work. I have the best clients in the world. They write me amazing reviews and send me great referrals. I have never had to advertise and am always busy. 

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Denver is a great city with plenty to offer. 

One of my favorite things about Denver is its excellent comedy clubs and outstanding music venues. I love the many outdoor activity options within a 30-60-minute drive of Denver. My least favorite thing is the traffic. (especially I-70).
