Today we’d like to introduce you to MaKayla Walker.
Hi MaKayla , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey with photography began when I was just 14 years old. I remember being fascinated by the idea of freezing a moment in time—capturing a feeling, a scene, or a story with just one frame. I started with landscape photography because I was drawn to nature and how connected I felt being in different environments.
But it wasn’t until this year, when I finally invested in a professional camera, that everything shifted. That step unlocked a deeper level of creativity for me. I started exploring other areas like street, portrait, and event photography. Each style challenged me in new ways and pushed me to grow both technically and artistically.
Now, I’m preparing to step into sports and fashion photography, which is a whole new frontier. It’s been a journey of evolution—from curious teenager to committed artist—and I feel like I’m just getting started.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, but I think that’s part of what makes the journey meaningful. One of the biggest challenges was just getting started—I had the passion from a young age, but I didn’t have the resources or guidance to pursue photography seriously. It wasn’t until recently that I was able to invest in a professional camera, and that decision came with a mix of excitement and uncertainty.
Another struggle has been trying to find my place in such a competitive industry. There’s a lot of pressure to define your style or stick to one niche, but I’ve always been drawn to different types of photography—landscape, street, portrait, and now sports as well as fashion. Balancing that curiosity with building a recognizable brand has taken time and reflection.
There were moments of doubt too but every challenge has helped me grow, and I’ve learned to trust the process and stay focused on why I started in the first place: the love of capturing real, powerful moments.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work is rooted in storytelling. Whether I’m shooting portraits, street scenes, DJ sets or local gatherings, my goal is always to capture something real—a moment, a mood, or an emotion that resonates.
What I’m most proud of is my versatility. I’ve never wanted to be boxed into one category. I’m driven by curiosity and the desire to challenge myself creatively. That willingness to explore different styles has not only helped me grow technically, but it’s also given me a deeper understanding of people, light, and timing.
What sets me apart is how I approach each shoot with fresh eyes. I don’t just snap a picture—I try to connect with the subject or the environment and capture something that feels authentic. I also pay a lot of attention to the small details: expressions, colors, composition, energy. That’s what helps me turn ordinary moments into memorable visuals.
At the end of the day, I think people connect with my work because it feels personal, intentional, and real. That’s something I never want to lose, no matter how far my journey takes me.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Finding a mentor and building a network has made a huge difference in my journey. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to mentor with Corey Wilkes, a talented Denver-based photographer. Attending his workshops and learning under his guidance has been invaluable. His patience, insight, and willingness to share his knowledge has really helped shape me into the photographer I am today.
When it comes to networking, my biggest piece of advice is: put yourself out there! Don’t be afraid to make the first move. I’ve reached out to event management companies offering to photograph their events, and more often than not, the responses have been positive. Those experiences have not only helped me build my portfolio, but also introduced me to so many amazing people—clients, creatives, and collaborators. One opportunity tends to lead to another, but it all starts with taking that first step.
Be genuine, stay open, and always bring your best energy to every opportunity. People remember that—and in this industry, relationships matter just as much as the work you produce.
