Rising Stars: Meet Marsh Lahowetz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marsh Lahowetz. 

Marsh, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been drawing ever since I was able to hold a pencil. I’ve always loved all things weird and creepy and I really draw inspiration from my own history and the supernatural. As a non-binary 25-year-old Mexican-American adult, I’ve lived in Colorado all my life, I’ve embraced free-handing traditional art; running an online store, and customizing items in my own time. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Having many chronic illnesses and having my own battles to deal will can be rough. The unforgiving nature of social media algorithms punishes you for going with your own flow but I try not to let it stop me. I have an amazing partner and pets that stay by my side. And I finally have a schedule where I can put my health first and keep art a priority. 

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love that my art is always something new. I rarely try to recreate the same thing more than once nor do I erase my mistakes. I choose to work with pens and Sharpies so that the lines are always bold but so is the detail. I embrace making mistakes and I enjoy making creatures of all shapes and sizes and I believe that pictures can give you a story faster than words can. 

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe just doing what I love when I want to do it. I shouldn’t stress about social media algorithms nor appealing to everyone. Being kind to yourself when you can’t create also helps
