Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Stevenson.
Hi Megan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’d like to consider myself an artist at heart; but the truth of that matter is that I’m a serial DIY’er with an entrepreneurial spirit. If I can figure out how to make it I will and then I’ll turn it into a business! Decorated sugar cookies has been a long-time passion of mine. I still love watching decorating videos! I wouldn’t say that I intended to start a cottage bakery – it just kind of happened to be honest. I began seriously pursuing learning how to decorate cookies and decided to sell what I made to obtain more supplies to keep practicing and the whole thing kind of developed from there. It has since turned into the most fun and fulfilling job I’ve ever had that affords me the flexibility to be a mom and wife. I’m in constant awe that so many wonderful people love what I make and choose me to bake for their most special events and life moments. Fort Carson in particular has been beyond supportive and it is my honor to serve the military community! I truly love my customers!!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The largest obstacle my business faces is the need to re-establish itself every 3-4 years. My husband is in the Army and although I LOVE getting to explore new places and make new friends, it can be daunting to have to start over and rebuild my business and customer base with each new duty station. I will say that the Army community is incredibly understanding of this struggle and so far, I have found nothing short of intense support and love from my fellow Army spouses!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in custom-decorated sugar cookies! It is essentially edible art that makes people happy and fills tummies! It is literally the best job in the entire world!! I would say that I am known for my oversized delicious cookies that come in a large variety of flavors and can be customized for any special occasion or for even just a random Tuesday! I have had several sets over the last year that have showcased my talent in unique and exciting ways resulting in show-stopping art you can eat!! I’m thrilled with each new theme request and the prospect of getting to master a new technique or perfect methods I’ve already been working on.
I think what sets me apart from others is that as with any artist, no matter the medium, my own personal style shines in eat set. My hand-painted cookies are one-of-a-kind and I love that people have come back to me and said, “I was at this party and saw cookies at the dessert table and immediately knew they were yours!” It’s so cool to me that my customers can recognize my work out in the world!
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Fortunately, for my field, there are tons of online resources and support groups to get questions answered and find encouragement. Social media groups have been a lifesaver! As well as local baker groups and finding other Army spouses who bake for a living.
I think it’s important to remember that there is room for all of us! Just because someone might be your competition does not have to make them your enemy. I have found the most support from other local bakers – we recommend each other, help each other with questions and baking needs and are even teaming up for a joint event soon!!
My advice to others looking for mentors would be – don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and introduce yourself to those in your field. Be genuine, build relationships and watch your business flourish for it! “We rise when we lift others.”
