Today we’d like to introduce you to Millicent Kang.
Millicent, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I believe the only constant is change. In my 20s, I was a middle school teacher living in Chapel Hill, NC. During that period, I became interested in Southern “outsider art” – the rawness and authenticity of that expression. When I had my own kids and realized I wanted more flexibility in my schedule, I began painting and using any materials in creative ways that resonated for me. At that time, I was intentionally not taking art classes as I wanted to develop my expression and not be judged or told what was right or wrong. From a small home office and our kitchen island, perhaps to the frustration of my family, I created an early body of work and it began resonating with others.
Now, 15 years later, I am evolving and changing personally, as are my paintings. I am inspired by nature and being out of doors, as well as responding visually to events and emotions that are universal. I am drawn to strong colors, textures and the freedom to express myself in styles that reflect different aspects of me. Using layers of acrylic paint with etchings, paper, beads, fabric, ink and other found objects, my pieces are an expression of gratitude, appreciation of nature and encouragement for others to step into whatever fills them up.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Being the owner of a small art business where I create all of the pieces and products, run my own marketing, take photographs, keep track of finances and everything that a business must do can be really challenging and overwhelming. Self-doubt can also creep in and play little tricks. Despite these hardships and inevitable disappointments, I try to stay true to myself and expression because that is why I create and is an important way I connect with others.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My goal is to create pieces that are accessible and inspire and brighten spaces. I infuse each piece with subtle sayings and etchings that are not always apparent but tucked into the piece as a little surprise when discovered and act as positive subconscious affirmations.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
