Rising Stars: Meet Nicole Domanico of Colorado Springs + Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Domanico

Hi Nicole, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always loved being creative, especially with a camera. My favorite memories are using disposable cameras from the drugstore to document family vacations and my every day life. I’ve always been content when left to my own devices and love coming up with artistic ways to pass the time.

Currently, I’m in a state of flux trying to figure out how I can fit art into my life. Recently, I’ve returned to drawing. That was probably my first love in art and to return to it has been a lot of fun and has lead to a lot of inspiration. I have a larger concept in mind I’m working on right now. No finished works to share on that front unfortunately.

My goals this year are to rebuild my website and update it regularly, exhibit my work in a juried show and/or gallery, and in general, put myself and my work out there more.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh no, absolutely not. I have had issues with self-confidence and imposter syndrome, comparison, equipment malfunction/learning curves, making the time for my creative life, and in general feeling lost and overwhelmed in some of my creative endeavors or like I’m not doing enough.

But I think the secret is to put yourself out there. Be scared and do it anyway. And it’s all part of the process, so don’t be discouraged. I’m saying this to myself as much as anyone who feels at a loss of how to pursue their art.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an artist. I primarily use photography and digital art to express myself. Currently, I am focusing more on the art world side of things and refocusing my intent. I still love to take on portrait sessions or any commissions if the occasion arises.

I’d say I specialize in dreamy portraits and documentary style photography. I really like to find the quiet moments in hectic places. Its almost like a meditative practice where I can tune out all of the noise and capture that one moment.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a quiet and reserved kid. I liked playing outside and attending large family gatherings or camping. I was constantly doodling or drawing my favorite TV show characters. And I really liked to sing.

When driving around became a thing, friends and I would go to the mall or local nature preserves and take pictures. Or we’d grab a frosty from Wendy’s and people watch in the grocery store parking lots. Then it was trips into the city on the train wandering around with a camera in jackets not suitable for the cold weather.
