Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Trinh
Peter, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have been interested in acting my whole life. My first exposure was a little improv group called Scared Scriptless. Later I would take acting classes at The Arvada Center. But I really didn’t start diving in until college at MSU Denver (before it was a “U”). We opened my first show, The Laramie Project on my 21st birthday in 2003, which was also the first line of the play: “On November 14th, The Techtonic Theatre Company descended on Laramie, Wyoming…” The synchronicity, along with the depth and power of what would now become called verbatim theatre, grabbed me, and I have enjoyed a fruitful career in theatre, film, voice-over, improv, and stand-up for the past 21 years.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Work as an artist is always up and down. I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy many years doing what I love full-time, but as a single parent of two, it’s not always feasible. Rejoining the work force as of recent has been a challenge, but necessary to support my teenage daughter.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an actor, first and foremost. Acting in all kinds of mediums is my natural calling. With over 20 years of continual experience, it is what keeps me grounded and motivated. In addition, I am also a writer, and stand-up comedian. Most of my writing is focused on plays and screenplays, but I also aspire to be a novelist, and often dabble in poetry. I have been doing comedy for a total of about 3 years, and am on Comedy Works’ New Talent Night rotation.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I have learned that balance in art and life is the key to much happiness. Being discerning with what projects I get involved in is important. Projects need to speak to my thesis of artistic expression, but I also need to feed my kids. I have learned a project needs to have two of three basic necessities for me to be involved: the script, the pay, the people.
