Rising Stars: Meet Rinnah Young of Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rinnah Young.

Hi Rinnah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey in the beauty industry started when I worked for Clinique in 2017. I loved the feeling of guiding women towards the right makeup and skincare routine that was perfect for each lady, which in turn helped them feel and look confident. I always had an interest in makeup and I did multiple makeovers for women while working for Clinique. At this point I wanted to start my own side makeup business and my mom suggested I get my license through cosmetology school. My school in South Carolina covered all areas of cosmetology (hair, skin, nails etc) but mainly focused on hair, which I didn’t care for; my focus was makeup. I tell people “I accidentally fell in love with hair” because after finishing my first haircut on a mannequin I was surprised how much I enjoyed the process.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
After a year of cos school I was hired by one of the best salons in my city, Circa 1810 in Port Royal, SC. I was an assistant for about 6 months before I went to state board and passed both the written exam and practical exam. I learned some by watching the other stylists in the salon and following stylists on social media, but most of my training was done on the job by trial and error. After 3 years at Circa and fine tuning the skills I had somewhat mastered with balayage and color theory, my husband and I had to move to Denver and I had to start all over. Finding the right salon was extremely difficult and I worked in 3 salons in less than 2 years before I moved into my salon suite and started my own business. Most of my clients from the other 3 salons followed me to my suite and I’m forever grateful and humbled my clients believed in me and my work. Starting over so many times in this industry has been pretty rough, but I love what I do and I wouldn’t change it for anything.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a hair stylist of 7 years and I specialize in balayage, lived-in color, highlights, grey coverage, grey blending, all over color, women’s haircuts and men’s haircuts. I recently became certified in a luxury hair extension method that takes only 15 minutes to install and I’m really excited to bring extensions to everyday working women who otherwise wouldn’t have the extra time to sit for extensions.
Like me, my suite is a pretty laid back, welcoming and comfortable space. My clients know they can relax and be themselves and they would say I’m like that, too. I’m proud of the relationships I’ve built over the years and my clients are like family. I look forward to coming into the salon everyday and I love what I do.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I utilize Instagram a lot for my business. I follow dozens of other stylists and educators to keep up with trends and stay exposed to other methods and techniques that I try in my own suite. I also follow creators, businesses and social media strategists. I use vagaro for my booking site, Canva to create a lot of my content and adobe Lightroom if I have to edit photos. I’m going to learn how to use capcut because most of the hair educators and stylists I follow use that app to make their reels. I also have cosmoprof and salon centric apps where I order hair color and products.
When I’m not using my phone for work, I use the Libby app to listen to books in my free time (getting ready for work, driving).
