Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob LeVere.
Rob, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been a musician since age 11, playing guitar, keys drums bass, etc. Playing mostly Punk Rock and metal until the age of 18. My best friend Nikki dragged me to a summer camp music festival where I saw Pretty Lights perform and after that, I realized electronic music was not only cool but I could make it 100 percent by myself and not have to rely on a band/bandmate.
Started making my music with my background of recorded instruments and instead of sampling other people’s music, my goal has always been to record my instruments and sample them instead of other people’s music. I love the sound of chopped-up samples and that has been an integral part of my homemade spaceship sound throughout my career.
Also, I love capturing the essence of a guitar solo or improvised notes over the top of a song in the spirit of a jam. I started playing shows in Chicago but was overwhelmed by the club scene and moved to Colorado to pursue a more inviting music scene.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Music careers are never a smooth road. I’ve struggled with my mental and physical health a lot. I used to “party” quite a bit. and that never helped me out once, I am currently very grateful to have my health and nowadays I won’t have more than a few glasses of wine and maybe a little weed! All that stuff served as a terrible distraction from my goal of making music that resonates with people’s souls.
Also, I struggled a lot through the pandemic. I had a lot of momentum leading up to it, and after it seemed like the industry was struggling and I’ve had to fight for attention and shows. But other than that, there is the constant pressure to create, make content, stay current with the times, and be constantly trying to figure out the industry.
It’s also worth noting the constant struggle to fit in but also be unique. In hindsight, it’s so important to follow what is in your heart and not try to fit in. Somewhere along the way the person you are trying to copy to fit in was simply doing their own thing and created a lane. We all need to create our lanes and not try to ride in other people. The person you are copying didn’t copy anyone. so, to be like them the most logical thing is to do your own thing as well.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am known for creating bass music adventures, I always say my music is not for the “Club” it’s for standing in the middle of an open field in the middle of the night and staring at the stars and realizing how small we all are.
Another thing that sets my music apart is it is for the most part “homemade” I record and track the majority of all my instruments. I don’t use a lot of loops and make sure everything is a creation of myself and comes straight from my heart to yours.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a nerd. Super into fantasy novels/video games and anime. I was also very hyperactive and loud and annoying haha. but I think most importantly I was very imaginative.
I remember being able to create worlds and stories anywhere I went. I remember being able to create an entire world in a corner of a room, creating dramatic storylines that were similar to the shows and movies I loved growing up such as anime and other things.
All my stuffed animals were characters with certain traits or special powers. I also remember pretending my mom’s minivan was a spaceship quite often. I called it a “spaceship van” but ya something I try to keep alive is my childlike imagination. it helps you make anything into something.
