Rising Stars: Meet Sage Yeager-Wheaton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sage Yeager-Wheaton.

Hi Sage, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Music, more specifically hip hop, has always been a huge part of my life. My dad was a DJ for Temple University radio station, and active in both the punk and hip-hop scenes in Philly. I was spoiled with great music, we never listened to the radio, but we had hundreds of CDs and tapes of different playlists he’d created for every occasion. As a kid, I played piano, violin, and saxophone, and sang in my school’s choir.

I’ve been writing songs for as long as I can remember, but I never told anyone about it or publicly debuted my work until 2019, when I read a short poem at a spoken word event in college. I planned on pursuing more with my music at the time, but when the pandemic forced the world into lockdown I put my music on the back burner. It wasn’t until 2022 that I decided to start rapping as CONSEQUENC3. I’ve worked with producers and DJs here in Denver and got beats from a producer in the UK while recording and engineering my songs on my phone.

This past summer I got connected with The White Moms who brought me out as a special guest at some of their shows at the Santa Fe Art Walk. My first song Real Mean was released in August of 2022 and I’ve put out three songs since Hi, 2hard2hurt, No Patience, and Bye (Freestyle). Currently, I’m working on writing some new music, recording at the studio, and of course, planning more live sets for 2023.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, the biggest obstacle for me has been saving up the money I need to start making merch, and paying for more professional beats and recording capabilities. Everyone in the hip-hop community has been extremely helpful, supportive, and encouraging throughout my journey. I couldn’t be more grateful to the people who have given me their time, energy, and criticism so that I can grow into a better rapper and artist.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love to party, I love staying up and making memories, I love meeting new exciting people, and now as a rapper, I get to share those experiences with my listeners. My first set of songs, VOLUM3 1, showcase my unique voice, smooth flow, and love of wordplay.

Mixing in new rhyme schemes, making silly comparisons that maybe no one will ever really get but me, and adding in French and Slavic words drive me whenever I feel stuck in the process. I never made music before so I was beyond stoked when my song “Hi,” which I helped produce, became my most listened-to track.

Do you have any advice for those just starting?
I started making music a few months ago but the best advice I can give to anyone is to set small accomplishable goals for yourself, manage your time wisely, and don’t be afraid of being vulnerable with your peers during the creative process.
