Rising Stars: Meet Sierra Duffy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Duffy.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always loved photography. I can’t pinpoint exactly when it became more. It’s just always been something I have enjoyed doing. I think I was the only one in my family who had a nice camera. So friends and family would ask me to take their photos. I never went to school or anything like that. It was just something I learned over time. Now I have a steady stream of sessions every month and it still blows my mind. I don’t see myself as a “professional photographer,” but I continue to generate business and I think that’s pretty cool and shows my work is important to because and it makes them smile. They have a keepsake that will last a lifetime.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think it took five years for me to have a solid calendar. I struggled a lot with how to make my photography visible. For me, when I try to push my business or try to keep up with all the Instagram and Facebook algorithms, my work gets lost and I get stressed. When I flip the focus on taking great photos and communicating with my clients that is when I have seen success. I think with social media, we get caught up in the count. How many likes I can get or how many followers I have that always bums me out and makes me question if I can do this but month after month, I am booked with sessions.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I would consider myself a lifestyle photographer. I love family sessions and maternity shots. Something about a mother with her baby safely in her womb is so beautiful. I’m also branching out to more styled shoots and partnering with local makeup artists and boutiques to create styled looks. That has been so fun! I’m most proud of booking my calendar. I’ve created all this on my own. I’ve built my own website, create all the social media contact and communication with all my clients. It’s finally paying off and that truly makes me proud!

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Photography is exploding! It’s so cool to see all these creative, insanely talented artists but it is also intimidating because everyone is so good and it is so hard to stick out. One thing I try to remember is there is a place for everyone. I’m excited to just be a part of this growing community.
