Rising Stars: Meet Tanya Barrera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanya Barrera.

Hi Tanya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! My name is Tanya, I’m a Mexican American DJ/Producer in the Deep/Melodic/Organic House realm. Super happy to be here! And thanks for sharing my story.

My music journey began when I was around 12 years old. I was going through a very difficult time in my life when I developed an Eating Disorder, Depression, and Anxiety. My only escape and the thing that comforted me the most was music. I would listen to Indie/Alternative/Rock music the most and would listen to it all day every day. Along the way, I learned how to play Violin by joining my school’s Orchestra and self-taught myself to learn Guitar, Keyboard and singing to cope with my emotions. The first time I learned about the world of EDM was when I was 17 years old. I remember my cousin talking to me about a rave called Sky Lab.

At the time, I had no idea what that was, so I did some research and listened to the artists on the lineup. Seven Lions and Adventure Club were the first artists that introduced me to this world of EDM. I remember being SO mind blown by the sounds I was hearing. For a while, I had their tracks on replay, and after many hours of music listening I discovered Lane 8. Daniel has been my biggest inspiration and is the whole reason why I started my project TASBA. I started dabbling with music production in 2020 after being deeply inspired by his sound. I wanted to make people feel the way his music made me feel. I started experimenting with different genres and shortly after learned how to DJ. With time, I realized I had a deep love for Deep/Organic/Melodic House Music. With this new love, I decided to focus all my attention on creating what I create now, a “Dream House”.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Honestly, so far things have been pretty smooth! I think a big part of it comes with having fun with what you’re doing and really putting your all into your craft. Whether that’s promoting shows, promoting music, networking with others, etc, I always have fun with what I do. I will say there are times when things get difficult like I’ll lose motivation/can’t form ideas for weeks.

Or I’ll get frustrated with the progress I’m making and of course, will start to compare and have imposter syndrome.

But that’s part of the journey and I think the more you fight it or expect things to be perfect all the time, the more you’ll suffer and struggle in the industry. Instead, I believe in my vision and put my energy where it’s needed.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in creating and mixing Deep/Melodic/Organic House Music.

One thing I’d say I’m known for is creating what I call “Dream House” and overall having a dreamy, euphoric, magical aura. I am most proud of my first release “Y” which has gotten over 24,000 streams and has traveled to different countries/cities.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
James Grebb my boyfriend deserves a lot of credit for pushing me to make my dreams a reality. Also, my close friends that have come to my shows and the Sky Terrace Collective for believing in me and supporting me with my music and shows.
