Rising Stars: Meet Ted Terroux

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ted Terroux. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Ted Terroux, author of “Practice for Real Life” and “The Complete Family Dog” and creator and presenter of the videos “Babies, Children and Dogs, Oh My!” and “Ted Terroux to the Rescue”, began training household and obedience trial dogs as a child in 1960 and has over 40 years of full time, professional, all-breed dog training experience with over 30,000 clients in the Denver Metro area since branching out on his own in 1982. He has titled dozens of personal and client dogs in obedience, field and show. His family started their Colorado dog training organization in 1958, operating at numerous locations throughout the Denver Metro area working with more than 70,000 family dogs over 60 years until his mother Sally’s retirement in 2018. Ted and his staff offer Puppy Classes, Basic Classes, Advanced Classes, Reactive Dog Classes and Private Instruction at their 4,500 square foot facility in the Colfax & Kipling Center in Lakewood. They also offer board and train services at their Ralston Valley Canine center in Arvada. Ted has appeared on Animal Planet, FOX31, KUSA Petline 9, KMGH7, KCNC NEWS4 and WB2 News and in the Rocky Mountain News and Denver Post. He has been consistently rated as a “Top Ten Trainer” or a “Winner” on ABC 7NEWS A-List in all of its forms since its inception. Ted has written dog behavior articles for large and small publications all over the United States and Great Britain, South Africa and Australia. Ted is also a canine behavioral consultant for many metropolitan Denver and Colorado regional rescue organizations that are dedicated to finding lifetime homes for “second-hand” dogs. He was instrumental in the development of two of the largest specific breed rescue organizations in Colorado: Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies in 1994 and Safe Harbor Lab Rescue in 1999 – each placing over 300 dogs per year on average. Ted has been an approved American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Evaluator since 1988 and he has been certified by several municipalities and counties in Colorado as an expert witness for both prosecution and defense in numerous trials involving dog behavior and ownership.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s always frustrating when a client waits until their dog has serious issues before they seek help for their dog. It takes so much more time and effort to get these dogs back on the right track and, unfortunately, there are times that we can’t.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We take great satisfaction in knowing that we have improved the quality of life for tens of thousands of both people and their dogs, saving the actual lives of many dogs and successfully keeping many dogs from being displaced to shelters and rescue organizations due to problematic behavior.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Colorado, being one of the most pet-friendly states in the US will likely continue to place a high demand on pet professionals of all types; veterinarians, trainers, walkers, groomers, daycares, kennels, suppliers and even scoopers!
