Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Houk.
Hi Vanessa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey as a professional photographer began in 2012, capturing family portraits and photographing my own children in the mountains near Aspen, Colorado. In those early years, I worked exclusively with natural light—a common and beautiful approach among photographers. While natural light offers a soft, organic quality, it also comes with limitations in consistency, control, and creative flexibility.
After mastering natural light techniques, I felt inspired to expand my skill set. I began attending conferences and workshops, and in 2017, I fully embraced off-camera flash in my portrait work. Today, I use a variety of lighting tools—including off-camera flashes with modifiers, strobe lights with softboxes, and constant LED lights—to create polished, professional images tailored to each client and setting.
Currently, about 90% of my work is professional headshots for individuals and businesses throughout Northern Colorado, photographed at my studio, Fort Collins Headshot Studio. From August through November, I shift gears to focus on senior portraits and family sessions. I especially enjoy senior portraits—they give me the creative freedom to experiment with lighting techniques and try new, bold ideas that push my skills and vision even further.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve intentionally grown my photography business at a steady pace to balance both family life and my marketing responsibilities for our other business, Fort Collins 4×4. Photography isn’t something you can easily dive into full time—it takes years of hands-on experience to truly master your camera, build up your gear, learn how to confidently direct people, and understand the ins and outs of running a business.
Owning your own business comes with real challenges, and success requires more than just talent—it takes commitment. A genuine love for your craft, paired with the grit to keep going even when things get tough, is what makes the difference.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a professional portrait photographer based in Northern Colorado, and I specialize in headshots, senior portraits, and family photography. About 90% of my work is focused on professional headshots for individuals and companies, most of which I photograph at my studio, Fort Collins Headshot Studio. From August through November, I also take on a high volume of senior portrait and family sessions. I especially enjoy senior portraits because they push me creatively—I’m always experimenting with new lighting techniques and bold ideas to create something unique for each client.
What I’m most proud of is that I’ve never paid for advertising—my business has grown entirely through word of mouth and building strong relationships with my clients. That trust and reputation are at the core of everything I do.
My work stands out for its bold, crisp, and dynamic style, made possible through advanced lighting techniques I’ve spent years mastering. I blend classic portraiture with a lighthearted, joyful energy, which comes through naturally in my images. My headshots are consistently polished, professional, and backed by a guarantee of client satisfaction every time.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
You can’t be an entrepreneur without being a risk-taker—it’s all one big risk. You risk putting your work out into the world and opening yourself up to critique, sometimes from people who’ve never picked up a camera but feel compelled to tell you how they’d have done it better. You risk your finances when you go all in on making a business work, and you risk time—time that could be spent with your family or doing something more stable.
It’s not always easy, and it’s certainly not always fun. But that’s part of the deal. The payoff comes when you find success on your own terms—when you experience the freedom of setting your own schedule, building something that’s truly yours, and knowing it was worth every risk you took to get there.
