Rising Stars: Meet Zayd Atkinson of Boulder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zayd Atkinson.

Hi Zayd, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I came to boulder in 2018 to pursue an undergraduate degree in environmental studies and yoga studies. I was involved in an incident with boulder county police in 2019 which lead to policy reform in boulder county. After graduation in 2022 I continued to teach yoga and environmental/experiential education for boulder county. I have trade skills and am currently working residential construction, educational programs for boulder county, and applying to CU and UVM for masters degree.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing has been smooth for me, life is hard and very challenging. I’ve had many struggles with balancing my visions of a ‘shared future’ as a civilization and society. Many of my obstacles lie within the existentialism of the world as well as just figuring out how to fit myself into that picture. This is difficult for someone like me, who cannot see a future if we continue to move forward as a species like we have been.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I instruct yoga, create and facilitate social-environmental programs (outdoor recreation and education), work with animals and agriculture, educate youth, and work residential construction. I am known for being hard working, versatile and influential in my community. I am proud of the progress I’ve made in my life as there was a time I could not imagine being here at all. What sets me apart from others is my heart and authenticity.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
We’re living in strange times. I want to encourage us all to thinking deeply about the future we all wish to envision regarding the relationship we wish to hold with each other and our natural world.
