Scott DeHuff of Planet Earth on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Scott DeHuff and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Scott, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
People often think that doing four podcast shows a week takes little effort. Fun, but not much work involved.
That’s far from the truth. Especially since I’m a one man company.
Show prep/producing, hosting, production, sales, promotion – all are time consuming by themselves. And all of those duties take certain skill sets that tend to be under appreciated.
Podcasting, if done correctly, takes a lot of work.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Scott DeHuff, and I host the number 1 ranked comedy/funny podcast in the state of Colorado – according to multiple podcast charts – DeHuff Uncensored podcast.
I’ve been in Denver media since 2002. I worked for just over 18 years with 104.3 The Fan as a producer/entertainment talent.
My show takes a comedic and unfiltered look at local to international news and sports.
While the main focus is comedy that uplifts my listeners and viewers, I will veer off and address serious topics, as needed. All with a honest straight from the heart approach.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
When I was five years old, my father lost his life, leaving my mom alone to raise three children – me being the youngest.
This taught me self reliance, the beauty of a laugh, and appreciation of those around me that promote positivity.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Fear of failure has always had its hooks in me.
It took encouragement from my amazing wife, Brandy, to push me in the right direction. To face the fear of failure in order to achieve success.
Until her, I stayed in safe zones, and never pushed myself to go towards my dreams.
Now, I still face fear of failure, but I’m fine with that. That tells me that what ever I’m afraid to fail at, is worth fighting for.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
That’s an interesting question. Yes and no.
For the longest time I was afraid to be me. It didn’t fit the mold of what people seemed to expect from me. So I’d be soft spoken, and distant from conversation.
When I got into radio, with the encouragement from individuals like Scott Hastings, Alfred Williams, Mike Evans, Mark Schlereth, Nate Lundy, and Darren McKee (Dmac), I started exploring my sense of humor, and my unique style of creativity.
So what the listeners get from my final product, is indeed me. Goofy nonsense. But, there are times I like to shut that entertaining element off, and go quiet. Get lost in my thoughts and not say anything to anyone.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I’m definitely doing what I was born to do.
I’ve worked in grocery stores and restaurants, but media is the only industry that makes me feel satisfied with my work.
The idea of helping people get through their day by making them smile and laugh, is very rewarding.
