Alycia, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something that always brings me joy is being with my kids. Doing anything with them is when I am happiest and especially when we are all outside in nature together.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I was running in the fall with my dogs and full double stroller in 2022 and saw the beautiful color-changing leaves on the trees. I immediately saw my chickens’ feathers at home and thought it might be fun to make a chicken out of leaves somehow. Feeling overwhelmed with the demands of life, I craved a creative outlet. Teaching science and volleyball are my true background but I have always thrived on creativity. During nap times for my kids and with a lot of trial and error, I began creating chickens out of leaves. I continued to collect and preserve all kinds of flora finding a way to repurpose nature into original pieces to last a lifetime. Once I started running out of leaves to use, I began collecting flowers and trying new pieces with their petals. From there, I realized that anything was possible and I have been finding ways to grow and expand my capabilities in all kinds of new ways. Pure Flora Creations was born and I am having so much fun in seeing all that is possible.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My work ethic is attributed to my parents and playing competitive volleyball for so long. The lovely people I meet at art shows and events continue teach me the most about my current work as an artist. They have shown me that I am capable of anything I put my mind to and to keep going and keep trying new things. Everyone I meet have all been such a driving force in understanding that there are no limits in creating. Hearing everyone tell me how unique and creative my art is brings such a warm feeling to my heart. I could not be more grateful to have so many others out there supporting me in my journey as an artist.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Any type of pain always teaches you what you might not understand all that you are capable of at the time. When I started this journey as an artist, I was trying to escape the pain of a very unhealthy marriage. As my journey as an artist grew, my confidence and strength also continued to grow. My identity as an artist became a metaphor for my growth as a person back into who I once was. I understand again that anything is possible and that there are no limits for strength nor resilience. The power inside of me has no limits and I will strive to continue to grow not only as an artist but as a mother and human being as well.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I will always believe that there are ways to grow. I think it is important to never get comfortable and to always think of ways to improve and evolve. I get new requests all of the time that make me wonder if I can pull them off but you never know until you try. I always want to keep an open mind when creating understanding that anything is possible with the right mindset established.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
Other than being with my kids, I feel most at peace when I am near any body of water. Water immediately calms me and allows my brain to take a moment to relax. Watching the water flow over the rocks when I am by the river. I find that this is a representation of my journey. I find myself carving my own pathway through the world with the desire to create a smooth and beautiful surrounding for my children and everyone around me. Water holds so much power and its ability to take even the most sharp and painful of elements and smooth them over time illustrates that we are also capable of this.
