We recently had the chance to connect with Andre Gonzalez and have shared our conversation below.
Andre, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
Imposter syndrome. It always seems to come out later. I’ve dealt with it. Everyone I’ve ever met in the publishing industry has dealt with it at some point in their careers.
Some see it as a lack of belonging. Maybe a lack of faith in oneself and their abilities. Whatever the root cause, I encourage people to measure their progress and success. We often feel like we’re chasing goals and never gaining ground. But if you take a step back and look at the big picture, only then can you realize how much you’ve achieved. And just maybe, you’ll start to generate some faith in yourself!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve been writing and publishing books since 2016. I currently have 25 novels out in the world. In 2019, my wife and I officially launched M4L Publishing and have since been taking on other authors and bringing their books to market.
We have over 50 books published through our company, with more than ten authors on our roster. Our focus each year is to grow a little bit and help other writers realize their potential. It’s been an absolute blast and a decision we’ve never regretted.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
We survived the Aurora Theater shooting in 2012. It was a life-changing event that shaped everything from that point forward. At the time, I wasn’t thinking about writing books (a dream I’d long held since I was young).
But after that night, my wife and I understood how fragile life was and how quickly it can be taken away. We made a vow to chase our dreams, and haven’t looked back since.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
At least once a week…
Seriously, though, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve wanted to quit.
Quitting always seems the easier option, but that’s only on the surface. Any dream worth chasing—and achieving—is going to have its challenges. I had even given myself “deadlines” of sorts…if I’m not where I want to be after 10 published books, then I’d quit. Then it was 15 books, then 20 books…
I’ve learned there is no such thing as a finish line. My goals of “where I want to be” are constantly changing. So I’ve stopped that mentality completely. Instead, I now focus on the process and enjoy the ride of seeing where I’ll end up!
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
I like to think so. I’ve never been a person who changes how I act based on who’s around. What you see is what you get. I’m introverted, try to mind my own business, and keep my head down and write.
I suppose I open up more to those I grow comfortable with, but don’t we all?
Looking back, I’ve never really cared what others think of me. That’s helpful when publishing books and some people try to break you down with negative reviews. I only worry about the things I can control!
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. How do you know when you’re out of your depth?
This comes back to the imposter syndrome I discussed earlier. I think as you progress throughout your career, you’ll find yourself in moments or situations that are out of your comfort zone. I’ve met authors and while talking with them, thought in the back of my mind….”Why is this person giving me the time of day?”
I’ve learned that being out of your depth, or comfort zone, is a sign of growth. Too often we fall into our comfort zones without realizing it. Comfort is the enemy of growth. So, when you feel that discomfort. That doubt. The imposter syndrome. Embrace it and be ready to grow!
